No data was breached during a malware outbreak about a month ago that caused some Recipe Unlimited Corp. restaurants to temporarily close, chief executive Frank Hennessey said Friday.“We have no evidence that any data was compromised,” Hennessey told a conference call with investors to discuss the company’s third-quarter results. The company experienced a network outage on Sept. 28 because of a malware virus. In response, Recipe disconnected restaurants from its network and internet, which disrupted operations at some locations and prompted some restaurants to close for a short time. The company brought the restaurants back online without any data loss, he said, and by Oct. 2 all locations had re-opened and all were operating normally by Oct. 4.Recipe anticipates the incident impacted its overall same restaurant sales by 0.3 per cent in the third quarter, which ended Sept. 30, Hennessey said.It reported same restaurant sales for the quarter were up 1.8 per cent compared to the same time the previous year for its fifth consecutive quarter of positive growth. The company is working with an forensic IT firm to analyze the malware infection and source, he said, and will not disclose any additional information about the incident for security reasons. The update came as Recipe, formerly known as Cara Operations, reported its most recent quarterly earnings. The company earned $23.8 million in its third quarter, up from $21.2 million a year ago. Its profit amounted to 37 cents per diluted share for the three-month period, up from 34 cents per share a year ago.System sales totalled $879.8 million, up from $684.7 million in the same quarter last year.On an adjusted basis, Recipe Unlimited says it earned 50 cents per diluted share, up from 46 cents per diluted share a year ago.Analysts on average had expected a profit of 47 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters Eikon.Recipe Unlimited had 1,370 restaurants at Sept. 30, including 1,311 in Canada and 59 located internationally. Its brands includes Swiss Chalet, Harvey’s, St-Hubert, the Keg, Milestones, Montana’s, Kelsey’s, East Side Mario’s, New York Fries and others. The company opened 39 new restaurants in the 39 weeks up to Sept. 30, but closed 46 — excluding Casey’s closures as the company is in the process of winding down its operations.Follow @AleksSagan on Twitter.Companies in this story: (TSX:RECP) read more

Gandhi, accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi and senior Congress leaders K C Venugopal and Mukul Wasnik, submitted the papers before district collector A R Ajayakumar at Wayanad district headquarters here. Braving the scorching heat, thousands of party workers, including men, women and youth gathered in Kalpetta town and its suburbs to see the Congress’ prime ministerial candidate, who landed here to file his nomination from the constituency which has the presence of various ethnic tribal groups. Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from Thursday After completing the nomination procedures at the collectorate here, Rahul Gandhi along with Priyanka Gandhi and senior leaders of the Congress-led UDF in Kerala undertook a roadshow to greet the voters of this constituency. The narrow lanes of Kalpetta town were packed with excited onlookers waiting in anticipation for the Congress chief and other party leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi. Talking to reporters after filing his nomination, Rahul Gandhi said he was fighting the polls from down south to send a message that India was one. “I have come to Kerala to send a message that India is one. South, north, east, west, centre… all are one… There is an assault taking place across the country by the RSS and BJP. I just want to send a message and I will stand from south India and north India. My aim was to give a message,” he said. “There is a feeling in south India that the way the Narendra Modi government is functioning, their (south) culture, language, history all are being attacked. “So I wanted to give a message that I will fight from north and south,” the Congress chief said, in response to his main opponent in Amethi, Union minister Smriti Irani alleging that his decision to fight from Wayanad was an insult to the people of Amethi. Priyanka Gandhi appealed to the people of Wayanad to take care of her brother and assured that he would not let him down. “My brother, my truest friend, and by far the most courageous man I know. Take care of him Wayanad, he wont let you down,” she tweeted after the roadshow. Party workers shouted that they would ensure a thumping victory for Gandhi. “We all are excited. All sections of people gathered here to greet our prime ministerial candidate. We will ensure a thumping victory for Rahul ji from the soil of Pazhassi Raja,” Ashraf, a UDF worker, who came from Vandoor assembly constituency said. Gandhi said he would “absorb all the criticisms” of the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF in Kerala, which is miffed over his Wayanad candidature, and made it clear that he will not speak against the Left parties during his campaign. The CPI(M) and Congress have been locked in a fight in Kerala and it will go on, he told reporters, adding he wanted to send a message of unity. “The CPI(M) and Congress have been locked in a fight in Kerala. This will go on. I understand that the CPI(M) has to fight me. But I am not going to say a word against them. “I am here to send a message of unity that south India is important and I fully understand that the CPI(M) has to attack me. So I will absorb all their attacks with happiness, but from me you will not hear a word against them in my campaign,” Gandhi told reporters. He also said there were two main issues faced by the country–lack of jobs and agrarian crisis. “Farmers are unaware of what the future holds for them. Youngsters are running from state to state searching for jobs and (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi has failed on both the fronts,” he said while attacking the PM. Attacking Modi on the issue of corruption, the Congress leader said, “The country had faith on the prime minister when he said he would be the Chowkidar. But the Chowkidar himself has given Anil Ambani Rs 30,000 crore of Air Force money. “He (Modi) has stolen money and given it to Anil Ambani who has no experience. Anil Ambani is in Rs 45,000 crore debt,” Gandhi alleged, once again attacking the NDA government over the Rafale deal. As the massive crowd of supporters gathered on both sides of the narrow roads of Kalpetta, security personnel had a tough time controlling the people to clear the way for vehicles. Priyanka Gandhi wearing a mustard and red border saree and Rahul Gandhi waved to the crowd. As the vehicle inched forward, the Congress president was seen shaking hands with many elated supporters. People were seen clicking photos with their mobile phones and waving flags of Congress and its ally Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Heavy security was in place in and around the collectorate ahead of the high profile visit of the Congress chief. read more
TRIPOLI- At least 15 people were killed and 95 hurt in Tripoli after a peaceful demonstration calling on unruly militias to leave the Libyan capital turned violent on Friday, an official said. The militias are holdovers from the 2011 uprising that ousted dictator Moamer Kadhafi and are a powerful force in the increasingly lawless North African country.“Fifteen dead and 95 wounded, several of them seriously, have been admitted to Tripoli hospitals,” a health ministry spokesman said. He was unable to give a breakdown between those killed in the demonstration and those who died in a subsequent assault on the militia headquarters.“It’s total confusion,” he said.Violence erupted when gunmen fired at hundreds of demonstrators carrying white flags from inside villas in the southern Tripoli district of Gharghour where the Misrata militia has its headquarters. The shooting sparked a violent response in which armed men assaulted the villas and set them on fire.A witness, who identified himself only as Ibrahim, said “most of the members of the militia barricaded themselves inside one single villa.”He later said the militiamen had evacuated the final villa and fled, adding that some militiamen had been wounded and others arrested.Other witnesses said heavy gunfire could be heard in Gharghour and that smoke was rising from the district.Sadat al-Badri, president of Tripoli’s city council, which called for the protest, told AFP the shots fired at demonstrators came from inside the headquarters.“Tensions are on the rise in Tripoli. We’re going to announce a general strike and launch a civil disobedience campaign until these militias leave,” he said.In sermons at weekly Muslim prayers earlier in the day, imams backed the call to protest against militias issued by the town hall as well as Libya’s mufti, the highest religious authority.‘No to militias’Hundreds of people carrying white flags in a sign of peace, as well as the national flag, and singing the national anthem had assembled in the capital’s Meliana Square.“No to militias,” their banners read. “Yes to the police and army.” The protesters, among them children, then marched to the Misrata militia headquarters in Gharghour to press their demands when gunmen inside fired into the air to scare them off. When the crowd continued to approach the building, the gunmen started firing at them, said an AFP correspondent who saw two wounded, including one hit in the stomach.A rocket also crashed into the main road near the demonstrators, without causing casualties, the correspondent said.A leader of the militia from Misrata, east of the capital, told private television channel Al-Naba the demonstrators had opened fire first. Before the villas were attacked, pick-ups loaded with anti-aircraft guns were seen headed for the area of the militia headquarters later Friday, witnesses said.Regular security forces were not sighted, apart from the air force making low passes over the capital. The mufti, Sadok al-Ghariani, appealed to residents to go home to avoid further bloodshed, while the health ministry called for blood donations to Tripoli hospitals. The march was sparked by violence on November 7 in which the Misrata militia also played a central role and which terrorised Tripoli residents and illustrated again growing instability in Libya.A Misrata militia chief, Nuri Friwan, had been fatally wounded in fighting at a checkpoint manned by other ex-rebels, and two people were killed in subsequent fighting.Residents of Tripoli frequently demonstrate against the militias, who have rejected calls from a weak central government to leave the capital.Last year, around 30 demonstrators were killed as anti-militia protests turned into violent clashes in the eastern city of Benghazi. The rebels who overthrew Kadhafi were hailed as heroes for bringing an end to more than four decades of dictatorship. But many have rejected government demands to turn in their weapons or join the national security forces, posing a constant threat to the stability of post-Kadhafi Libya. read more
The anxiety level on the court seems to heighten. If the opposing team’s players weren’t in fear of the defense in front of them before, they almost surely are now. This is what happens when Aaron Craft and Shannon Scott play together, two quick defensive-minded guards that give ball handlers more trouble than they usually can manage. It’s been occurring more often lately, too, and it’s a major reason for Ohio State’s surge into the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes, a No. 2 seed in the West Region, take on No. 15 seed Iona Friday in Dayton. Last season, it was the combination of two-time all-American Jared Sullinger and then-sophomore forward Deshaun Thomas that OSU rode to the Final Four. This March, the Buckeyes most potent duo might be that of Craft, a junior guard, and Scott, a sophomore. They don’t score or rebound at the rate Sullinger and Thomas did; their effect on the game comes largely on the opposite end of the floor. During OSU’s three-game run to the Big Ten Tournament title in Chicago last weekend, Craft and Scott combined for 13 steals. In the Buckeyes’ two biggest wins down the stretch in the regular season, Michigan State on Feb. 24 and at Indiana on March 5, Craft and Scott totaled 11 steals. “We held a lot of teams to less points than they usually have. The defense we played was great for us,” Scott said. Craft has been, OSU coach Thad Matta said, the best defender in the country, “no question,” for the past two seasons. Scott’s ascension to defensive lore has taken some time to develop. “I think he has grown into it,” Matta said. “I think in essence what changed was his mentality. I give Shannon a ton of credit, being perceptive enough to understand what (he) has to do to help this basketball team.” Before Scott arrived in Columbus for his freshman season in 2011, he was hardly the defensive presence he is now. “He and I joke, ‘You didn’t have to play very hard in high school, did you?’ I joked with him, ‘How many charges did you take?’ He said, ‘I’ve never taken a charge,’” Matta said. One of Matta’s biggest selling points to Scott during the Georgia native’s recruitment was that he would get to play against Craft every day in practice. Now, they’ve been going head-to-head for nearly two years. It’s made them both better players. “I can pressure him, he can pressure me, and it kind of pushes us that way,” Craft said. “It’s made both of them better players,” Matta said. “You look at the growth of both guys, when Shannon got here, I said if you go against him every day, there’s no one in college basketball that can guard like him.” The two play at such a high level in practice, OSU’s coaching staff has to bottle them up at times. “The thing we have to watch at times is those two take such a beating with all the ball screens. We have to give them a break every time we can,” Matta said. Of the duo, Craft gets most of the credit. He’s the one on the cover of all the magazines, the one fans swoon over. But this season, Scott has been just as good, if not better, statistically, when it comes to defense. Scott has the best defensive rating of any player in the Big Ten, a statistic used to measure a player’s capability to prevent the other team from scoring. He was third in the conference in steals behind Craft, despite playing 13 minutes less per game. Scott led the conference in steal percentage, taking the ball away on 5.7 percent of an opposing team’s possessions while on the floor. Craft said Scott makes himself unforgettable while playing defense. “He’s very pesky. He does a really good job of not quitting on plays,” Craft said of his counterpart. “Even if you get by him, or you think he’s set by a screen, he’s right by you right away. You really have to be careful with the ball. You just can’t forget about him.” Craft’s no slouch, either, checking in at second in the Big Ten in steals per game and fourth in steal percentage. The two have benefited offensively by playing together as well. When they are on the floor together, Craft slides off the ball with Scott taking the point. This allows Scott to push the ball in transition and Craft to focus more on scoring. “You see things a little differently,” Craft said of playing with Scott on offense. “You don’t have to worry about taking care of the ball as much. You can sit back and read the defense a little more. It’s just really helped out as a whole.” The duo has been a critical aspect of OSU’s “small” lineup that also features Thomas and sophomore forwards LaQuinton Ross and Sam Thompson. That quintet was on the floor in the closing minutes of the Buckeyes’ game against Wisconsin Sunday, in which OSU won its fourth Big Ten Tournament championship, 50-43. “It really helps us space the floor out … with LaQuinton and Deshaun’s ability to guard multiple positions, it gives us a lot of mismatches on the offensive end,” Craft said. He and Scott will be pushed Friday. The Gaels are the second in the country in scoring at 80.7 points per contest. Iona senior guard Lamont “Momo” Jones averages 23.0 points per game. Jones’ running mate, junior guard Sean Armand, pours in 16.6. “They have a couple guys on their team that really like to score the ball,” Craft said. “They can really get out and score the ball in a variety of ways. It’s going to be a big team defensive effort this week and that’s what we’re trying to work on.” With Craft and Scott at the helm of OSU’s defensive attack, the Gaels likely have a lot to prepare for, too. OSU and Iona are set to tip off at the University of Dayton Arena at 7:15 p.m. Friday. If OSU wins, it will play the winner of the game between No. 7 seed Notre Dame and No. 10 seed Iowa State Sunday. read more

Brazil’s state-controlled oil company Petrobras posted its biggest-ever quarterly loss on Monday after booking a large write down for oil fields and other assets as oil prices slumped and refinery projects faltered.Petróleo Brasileiro SA, as the company at the epicenter of Brazil’s massive corruption scandal is commonly known, had a consolidated net loss of 36.9 billion reais ($10.2 billion) in the fourth quarter, according to a securities filing. The bigger-than-expected shortfall was 48 percent larger than the 26.6 billion-real loss a year earlier, the previous record. It also turned the company’s full-year 2015 result, which was positive through September, into a full-year loss. For a second year in a row, Chief Executive Officer Almir Bendine said, Petrobras will not pay dividends to either its government or non-government investors and it plans to make no bonus payments to employees. The result caught analysts and investors by surprise. The largest fourth-quarter loss expected in a Reuters survey of analysts was 9.7 billion reais. Petrobras common shares PBR.DG fell 5.5 percent in after-hours electronic trading in New York, after the results were released. The red ink at Petrobras was driven by a 46 percent decline in the price of benchmark Brent crude oil LCOc1, a drop that has driven up losses and caused write downs throughout the global oil industry.Of the 46.4 billion reais written off in the quarter, 83 percent was for oil fields. A year earlier, write downs were also the cause of Petrobras losses, although they were largely related to the giant price-fixing, bribery and political kickback scandal that has roiled the company and help fuel calls for the impeachment of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.Rousseff, who was chairwoman of the board of Petrobras from 2003 to 2010 when much of the corruption took place, has denied any wrongdoing.Petrobras’ poor result also bodes poorly for Brazil’s economy. Brazil’s biggest company and largest investor has been slashing spending and laying off thousands in the wake of the scandal and oil price drop, helping deepen the country’s worst recession in decades.Net sales, or sales minus sales taxes, totalled 85.1 billion reais in the quarter and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation, or EBITDA, were 17.1 billion reais. The fourth quarter result pushed the company’s full-year 2015 result to a 34.8 billion-real loss. The company, though, did manage to increase its cash position at the end of the period to 97.8 billion reais from 44.2 billion reais by cutting investments. That provided it a bigger cushion to pay its 492.8 billion reais, or $126.2 billion dollars, of debt at the end of the quarter.Bendine told reporters on Monday, the company can generate enough cash to make all its debt payments through the end of 2017 without needing to raise new capital, even if its plan to sell about $14 billion of assets this year runs into trouble.”Even if we hit a road-bump we have sufficient cash through 2017,” Bendine said. “This doesn’t mean if we have good opportunities to raise cash or lengthen maturities we won’t do it.”Total debt in reais, though, was 40 percent greater at the end of 2015 than a year earlier. The biggest non-oil-field write-off was 5.28 billion reais for the company’s unfinished Comperj refinery near Rio de Janeiro, whose ballooning costs and repeated delays were one of the key focuses of the Petrobras corruption scandal.Start-up of the refinery has been pushed back to at least 2023 because Petrobras has been unable to find a partner to help finance the plant’s completion, company officials said on Monday.($1 = 3.6119 Brazilian reais) read more

Thus, we should not be making baseless attacks on others. One of Jesus’ Apostles said, “If a man says he loves God, but hateth his brother is a liar. Revelation and other NT writings tell us that liars will go to Hell. Remember that we are all sinners, and that we should remove the beam of wood from our own eye, before trying to remove a speck of dust from another person’s eye. The scripture in Matthew about judging others, means “not to judge unrighteously, to repent of our own sins before judging others, then judge righteously with justice, compassion and mercy.” March 12, 2019 at 12:32 pm Share This! However, Satan is the “father of all lies” and the “author of contention.” I have read all of the great philosophers, and much of it was a waste of time. I love Plato’s Dialogues, but they are not of the same value as the Holy Bible. With hindsight, I would have preferred using the time to study the Bible.Christianity, on the other hand in comparison to philosophy, is built on a foundation of Eternal truths and principles, and reveals these to those who are in tune with the Holy Spirirt, the Ultimate Reality of God. Faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit. But first we must have a desire to believe. Our brains are hardwired, according to an article in TIME magazine, to believe in God. The NT tells us that hearing the Word of God arouses something inalienable in both our Collective Unconscious and Personal Unconscious. Practising the Lord’s doctrines while still in the desire to believe stage, enables the Holy Spirit to start changing that basic desire to believe into Faith. This may be why Christ specifically mentioned to His followers that they were the “salt of the earth.” To modern English speakers, that idiom is used to mean good, average people, but that wasn’t what Christ meant. He was speaking to very few who believed him. Those who believed were to do for the earth what salt does to a pot of stew or soup. A little seasoning nevertheless plays an important part.Luke 13:20-21:And again he said, Wherefore unto shall I liken the kingdom of God? Remember that when the gospel is finally preached in all the world, the Second Coming will occur and the end of the current condition will follow. Latter-day Saints believe that all mankind will have an opportunity to hear the Gospel but that most of the population of the Earth will hear it in the Spirit World (Afterlife/Paradise for the righteous, the spirit prison/Hell for the wicked). Those who had no opportunity to hear it in mortality will have that opportunity then. When you consider the small minority of the earth’s population throughout all of history that even knew about Jesus Christ at least 10 billion people have lived on Earth), it should not surprise us that many in our day will not hear about Him either. Jesus loves the sinner, but hates the sin. Jesus is also opposed to same sex marriage. Adam and Eve was the ordained relationship of man and woman in marriage to bring forth children, and be friends, lovers, companions.Same sex and same gender attraction are not a sin as long as you don’t act on those impulses.Everybody wants to be loved. My favourite TV show is Touched By An Angel. Every episode reminds me that we have a Heavenly Father who loves us deeply. Finding joy in Jesus Christ is much more satisfying than anal sex between homosexuals, and the use of vibrators, clitoral wands, and dildos by lesbians. The fact that some heterosexual couples also do these things doesn’t make it okay with God: no unclean thing can enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.Personally, I believe that the unholy and impure sexual practices of heterosexuals, including videotaping their sexual relations to use as “home-made porn” to sexually arouse each other, is much more of an abomination to the Lord than those who experience same sex attraction and feeling lonely or whatever, engage in homosexual/lesbian practices. Though repentance is often hard, I think that the LGBTQ community is more likely to repent and change their lifestyle, than heterosexual couples who engage in the same sexual practises. The Lord says, “I will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all people.” And how many times are we to forgive? 70 times 7. Stormy Daniels’ suit alleges Trump “purposely did not sign the agreement so he could later, if need be, publicly disavow any knowledge of the ‘Hush Agreement.’ “The White House on Monday disputed adult film star Stormy Daniels’ claim that she was threatened to keep quiet over her alleged affair with Donald Trump and said the president continues to deny the relationship.Daniels’ detailed her allegations in a widely watched interview with “60 Minutes” that sparked new legal wrangling between attorneys for the porn star and the president’s team. A lawyer for Michael Cohen, Trump’s personal attorney, demanded that Daniels publicly apologize to his client for suggesting he was involved in her intimidation. Daniels responded by filing a revised federal lawsuit accusing Cohen of defamation.Trump, who frequently takes on his foes in person and on social media, remained uncharacteristically quiet about the matter Monday. He sent a cryptic tweet saying “fake news” has “never been more voluminous or more inaccurate” but it was unclear what exactly he was referring to.Instead, he left the denials to his White House staff. Spokesman Raj Shah declined to say whether the president had watched Daniels’ interview, but said Trump did not believe any of the claims she made.“The president strongly, clearly and has consistently denied these underlying claims, and the only person who’s been inconsistent is the one making the claims,” Shah said. But Daniels was on Trump’s mind this weekend in Palm Beach, Florida, where he had dinner Saturday night with Cohen at his Mar-a-Lago estate.Trump, according to one person who spent time with him, told guests that Daniels now owes him $21 million for breaking her silence, and that every time she talks, she owes him a million more. Trump appeared in good spirits, laughing off the fact that Daniels will be bringing her “Making America Horny Again” strip show to a nearby venue next month, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to disclose private conversations.Mar-a-Lago member Chris Ruddy, the CEO of Newsmax, told ABC Sunday that Trump told him “much of the Stormy Daniels stuff” is a “political hoax.”Trump returned to Washington Sunday night, though first lady Melania Trump stayed behind in Florida. A spokeswoman for Mrs. Trump said she is “focused on being a mom and is quite enjoying spring break at Mar-a-Lago while working on future projects.”In her interview, Daniels said she’d slept with Trump once, shortly after Mrs. Trump gave birth to the president’s youngest son. She also said that a man approached her in a Las Vegas parking lot in 2011, when she was with her infant daughter, and threatened her with physical harm if she went public with her story. In a letter late Sunday night, an attorney for Cohen demanded that Daniels publicly apologize to his client.“In truth, Mr. Cohen had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with any such person or incident, and does not even believe that any such person exists, or that such incident ever occurred,” wrote Brent H. Blakely. He said Daniels and her lawyer, Michael Avenatti, should “cease and desist from making any further false and defamatory statements about my client.”Daniels, in the revised lawsuit she filed Monday, alleges Cohen made a false statement that damaged her reputation when he released a statement in February that intimated she was lying. In a round of television interviews Monday morning, Avenatti said he was holding back certain details of the alleged affair, including the contents of a CD or DVD he tweeted a picture of last week, for strategic reasons. “It would make no sense for us to play our hand as to this issue and we’re not going to do it right now,” he said on NBC’s “Today” show.Daniels received a $130,000 payment days before the 2016 presidential election for her silence and has sought to invalidate a nondisclosure agreement she signed. Cohen has said he paid the $130,000 out of his own pocket while asserting Trump never had sex with the porn actress.Previously, Cohen has said neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Daniels and he was not reimbursed for the payment.During Monday’s briefing, Shah said neither the White House nor Trump had violated campaign finance laws that restrict political contributions.“The White House didn’t engage in any wrongdoing,” Shah said of Trump’s behavior, adding that there was “nothing to corroborate” Daniels’ intimidation claims. In the interview, Daniels described a sexual encounter with Trump that began with him talking about himself and showing her an issue of a magazine with his picture on the cover. She said she ordered him to drop his pants and, in a playful manner, “I just gave him a couple swats.” At one point she said he told her: “Wow, you — you are special. You remind me of my daughter.”The interview gave “60 Minutes” its biggest audience in a decade, with slightly more than 22 million viewers tuning in, according to Nielsen Co. estimates.Daniels is not the only woman accusing Trump. Former Playboy model Karen McDougal told Cooper in a CNN interview broadcast Thursday that her affair with Trump began at a bungalow at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 2006. McDougal said she ended the relationship in 2007 out of guilt concerning Trump’s wife, Melania.McDougal has filed suit in Los Angeles seeking to invalidate a confidentiality agreement with American Media Inc., the company that owns the supermarket tabloid National Enquirer. It paid her $150,000 during the 2016 presidential election. The lawsuit alleges that McDougal was paid for the rights to her story of an affair, but the story never ran. It also alleges that Cohen was secretly involved in her discussions with American Media. Share read more

One of these areas involves the dynamics of magnetic topological defects in thin films of ferromagnetic materials. In a new study, physicists have demonstrated that magnetic topological defects called skyrmions, which resemble swirling eddies or bubbles, behave differently than do other magnetic defects. The scientists show that skyrmions’ unusual behavior arises from the strange occurrence of waves on the bubbles’ edges that travel with different speeds in opposite directions. Play Model of a skyrmion bubble with propagating waves on its edges. The dashed line is the undisturbed bubble in its lowest-energy state. The scientists then created a deformation of a specific form, in this case a wave that fits three times on the circumference, and let it go. On a skrymion bubble, the waves traveling left and right have different speeds, unlike standing waves, which are made of waves that have equal speeds even when traveling in opposite directions. If the same deformation were created on a regular taut string instead of a skyrmion bubble, it would result in two running waves traveling in opposite directions with equal speeds. Their superposition would be a standing wave that is going nowhere and merely oscillates in place, keeping its shape. The behavior of the waves on the skyrmion bubble changes in time because the faster wave decays faster. As time goes on, its amplitude diminishes and by the end of the movie you are only seeing a single running wave traveling clockwise. This understanding of the dynamics of these odd magnetic entities is not only interesting from a basic physics perspective, but also for potential applications.”Magnetic bubbles and other topological defects can be used as memory or logic elements,” Tchernyshyov said. “Stuart Parkin at IBM has made some waves with his concept of racetrack memory, in which he uses domain walls in magnetic nanowires for computational purposes. Whether skyrmions will be eventually used in technological applications is anyone’s guess. Our work is directed more at understanding the basic physics of magnets.” Play Model of a fast counterclockwise traveling wave. The superposition of this wave and a slow clockwise traveling wave (see other movie) results in the wave that forms on a skyrmion bubble. Movie credit: Oleg Tchernyshyov Tchernyshyov added that this investigation of the dynamics of skyrmion bubbles is just one part of the researchers’ broader goals of better understanding magnetic defects in general.”This work was part of a larger scheme,” he said. “The motion of topological defects in magnets is a complex phenomenon. A few years ago we came up with a new approach to its theoretical description. We proposed a simple and economical theory to describe the most important aspects of their motion [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 127204 (2008)]. The current paper is one of the applications of this new language. We are currently working on classifying magnetic textures by topology in three-dimensional magnets, as opposed to two-dimensional thin films.” The physicists, Imam Makhfudz and Oleg Tchernyshyov at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, US, and Benjamin Krüger at the University of Hamburg in Germany, have reported their discovery of some intriguing dynamics of skyrmion bubbles in a study recently published in Physical Review Letters.Scientists have previously known that skyrmions aren’t like other magnetic defects that exist in thin-film ferromagnets. The dynamics of a more typical defect, a vortex, has been described as resembling the motion of charged massless particles in a magnetic field. Scientists originally expected skyrmions to move in a similar way. However, recent simulations have shown that the behavior of skyrmion magnetic bubbles significantly deviates from this model. Whereas vortices displaced from an equilibrium position follow a circular trajectory, the trajectory of the center of a skyrmion bubble follows roughly a more complicated curve, namely a hypocycloid. To explain this puzzling trajectory, the physicists here have shown that skyrmion bubbles must possess inertial mass. The mass is generated not at the center of a bubble but rather at its edge. According to the physicists’ equations, waves on the boundary of a bubble travel left and right at different speeds. While the slow waves are insensitive to inertia, the fast waves involve magnetic oscillations, giving the bubbles mass. “The greatest significance of our work, in my view, is the existence of these funny waves that travel back and forth with different speeds,” Tchernyshyov told Phys.org. “This is very unusual, as normally waves travel with equal speeds in opposite directions. There are a few examples of physical systems where that happens, e.g., the edge of a Quantum Hall liquid, where electrons move in one direction only. Such systems know right from left, so they are called ‘chiral.’ Ours is another example of waves in chiral systems.” Play Model of a slow clockwise traveling wave. The superposition of this wave and a fast counterclockwise traveling wave (see other movie) results in the wave that forms on a skyrmion bubble. The ads indicate that these representations of remote conference attendees are on Microsoft’s virtual conferencing technology agenda. One of the two ads posted was for a Software Development Engineer, Principal. The ad asked: “Want to be responsible for redefining how people telecommute, communicate and work? Not just getting them connected, but truly bringing them together with cutting edge software and hardware.” Microsoft said it is now developing the hardware and software necessary to have a realistic physical body-double or proxy taking part in a remote meeting.Microsoft said the remote worker will have a “true seat at the table, the ability to look around the room, turn to a colleague and have a side conversation. Longer-term, this same platform will enable high-definition communication scenarios for consumers over Skype.” That wording indicates the new technology, once ready for release, would take videoconferencing beyond talking heads and into the realm of communications capturing dynamic exchanges of multiple conversations. The frequently heard reservation by business managers about tele-meetings has been how in-person meetings generate more substantive idea-swaps and better collaborations. Should the technology enable a true seat at the table, as described by Microsoft, then businesses may be far more amenable to teleconferencing.Microsoft’s ad called on experienced developers (C/C++/C#). The leader is expected to not only lead the project but also contribute to the architecture and hands-on coding. The ad called for expertise in “any of the following,” WinRT, Win 8, mobile applications, communication applications, distributed systems, Lync/Skype, video & audio codecs; image/video processing, computer vision, embedded systems, firmware, sensing, robotics, control systems, and hardware products. The other job listing was similarly for a software development engineer, and this ad referred to a “Microsoft Mesa project.” According to the ad, “The Microsoft Mesa project is creating immersive telepresence products that will change the way remote workers experience and are experienced in meetings.”The ad mentioned how Microsoft builds on technologies like Lync and Skype and also “emerging” ones like Windows 8 and Surface, with the additionof “unique Mesa specific technologies (like video processing).” According to the ad, experience with “XAML, MVVM and property models is a plus.” Explore further Skype jacks ads into free Internet phone calls Citation: Microsoft job ads for engineers show body-double plans (2013, April 29) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2013-04-microsoft-job-ads-body-double.html © 2013 Phys.org More information: Viewport: A Fully Distributed Immersive Teleconferencing System with Infrared Dot Pattern: research.microsoft.com/pubs/16 … 5/msr_tr_2012-60.pdf (Phys.org) —The buzz around new happenings at Microsoft stems from two job ads posted last week. The ads reveal that Microsoft means serious business about working on telepresence technology that will enable body doubles, in the next wave of business conference calls. Microsoft seeks two software development engineers, and the job ad wordings reveal Microsoft’s research goals: Microsoft plans to deliver a telepresence technology system that can depict a person on the other end of a business conversation. March 18, 2014 Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now Crowdfunding sites such as Kickstarter, Fundable and Indiegogo are responsible for some of the coolest projects coming out right now. The sky’s the limit when it comes to these projects. Everything from a music label deal to food companies, there is something for everyone. Here’s a list of 10 of the coolest crowdfunding success stories.1. FORM1: With 3D printable clothing being a prediction for the future, the need for affordable home printer options needs attention now. Well, researchers from the MIT Media Lab have taken on the challenge creating the FORM1, a project to create an affordable, professional 3D printer for the public. The FORM1 blew through its original $100,000 goal, getting over 2,000 backers and $3 million dollars in funding. 3D printing at your house may not be as far off as you thought!2. Hidden Radio 2: The original Hidden Radio was a small, beautiful speaker to make your music not only sound good, but look good, too. The creators are back with its follow up, the Hidden Radio 2. With an incredibly sleek, bullet-like design, the designers have improved the quality, made the volume adjustable just by twisting the speaker system itself and overall delivered a superior but powerfully simple speaker for your home or home office. Music can sound and look good with this two-time Kickstarter success story.Related: Big Milestone: Crowdfunding Site Kickstarter Reaches $1 Billion in Pledges3. SkyBell: Don’t you hate it when you’ve been waiting forever for a package and you just miss it? Or when you’re working at home and the doorbell rings to reveal some solicitors who don’t take no for an answer? Well so do the creators of SkyBell, who developed a camera system with audio and microphone, that works through a smartphone app. You can literally answer (or not) your door from anywhere with your iPhone. Talk, listen, leave instructions and see who you’re talking to all with the affordable and reliable SkyBell system.4. Pebble: The Pebble wristband is one of the smartest, coolest watch options out there. The Pebble watch works with your apps from your iPhone and Android to give you instant, easy notifications of important calls, emails or other app alerts via the display on the watch’s digital face. It looks cool, it works amazingly and it blew the lid off the competition, earning $1 million of support in only 28 hours on Kickstarter. It eventually went on to raise more than $10 million.5. Elevation Dock: The design team behind Elevation Dock wasn’t happy with the Apple docking solutions out there. So they decided to go on Kickstarter and get funding to create a better one. ElevationLab, the team behind Elevation Dock, rounded up $1.4 million to create the dock of their dreams thanks to crowdfunding. It features a minimal industrial design with a new custom NanoPad underside to keep it locked to your desk. You can undock your phone with one hand and it was designed to work with or without your phone case on. It’s the docking station of your dreams.6. The Nikola Tesla Wardenclyffe Science Center: It isn’t just high tech that succeeds on crowdfunding. Web comic The Oatmeal has long ranted and raved about how unfair it is that modern culture knows about Edison and has completely forgotten the innovator and entrepreneur Nikola Tesla. He finally took his rant to Indiegogo and the result was more than $1 million raised to save the site of Tesla’s incomplete lab, Wardenclyffe Tower. The funding was earned in just nine days and the organizer realized the public was ready to make the project more than just a restoration. So ground was broken to create a museum and science center honoring Tesla. Related: These Entrepreneurs Raised Almost $40,000 for Their ‘No-Sock’ Socks7. Veronica Mars Movie. Veronica Mars was one of the fifth highest grossing crowdfunding projects to date, aiming for $2 million in funding, according to Wikipedia. It ended up with over $5.7 million and a studio-backed film adaptation based on the popular UPN/CW television series of the same name. Fans providing the funding for the films they want to see up front, instead of lamenting the $12 they just wasted at the theater? That’s a revolutionary concept that could catch on quickly!8. The Glif: True entrepreneurism and invention comes from solving a common problem that no one has been able to address previously. Queue the crowdfunded Glif, a simple smartphone holder that works as a stand or tripod attachment. It’s such a simple piece of engineered plastic, yet it solved the common problem of stabilizing that users faced when trying to use their iPhone camera to film or photograph. The project was designed on a $10,000 budget, but ended up surpassing $137,000 in funding. Proof that the public was ready for the Glif solution!9. Oculus Rift: If you read any kind of tech news in 2013, you know about the hype surrounding the crowdfunded virtual reality head-mount display called Oculus Rift. It’s an incredible Kickstarter project that aimed to take virtual reality into an accessible and actually usable home gaming dimension. More than $2.4 million dollars was raised over a $250,000 goal. This VR head-mounted display unit became a reality when units started shipping out in March 2013.10. The Scanadu Scout: The Scout is the first medical tricorder, which in layman’s terms means it’s a scanner that is packed with sensors designed to read your vital signs and then wirelessly send them to your smartphone to diagnose symptoms in seconds. That could be a helpful or even life-saving device. Anything from a sick child to an aging parent, allergy attack to heart attack or stroke, the implications are huge for sensing and diagnosing early medical issues before they become life-threatening. The Scanadu Scout set out to raise $100,000 on Indiegogo and ended up with over $1.5 million in funding. It just goes to show that early adoption for early dedication is a popular idea people are willing to pay to develop.Related: If I Knew Then: Indiegogo Co-Founder Makes His Mark Helping Others Follow Their Passion 6 min read Enroll Now for Free read more
