No data was breached during a malware outbreak about a month ago that caused some Recipe Unlimited Corp. restaurants to temporarily close, chief executive Frank Hennessey said Friday.“We have no evidence that any data was compromised,” Hennessey told a conference call with investors to discuss the company’s third-quarter results. The company experienced a network outage on Sept. 28 because of a malware virus. In response, Recipe disconnected restaurants from its network and internet, which disrupted operations at some locations and prompted some restaurants to close for a short time. The company brought the restaurants back online without any data loss, he said, and by Oct. 2 all locations had re-opened and all were operating normally by Oct. 4.Recipe anticipates the incident impacted its overall same restaurant sales by 0.3 per cent in the third quarter, which ended Sept. 30, Hennessey said.It reported same restaurant sales for the quarter were up 1.8 per cent compared to the same time the previous year for its fifth consecutive quarter of positive growth. The company is working with an forensic IT firm to analyze the malware infection and source, he said, and will not disclose any additional information about the incident for security reasons. The update came as Recipe, formerly known as Cara Operations, reported its most recent quarterly earnings. The company earned $23.8 million in its third quarter, up from $21.2 million a year ago. Its profit amounted to 37 cents per diluted share for the three-month period, up from 34 cents per share a year ago.System sales totalled $879.8 million, up from $684.7 million in the same quarter last year.On an adjusted basis, Recipe Unlimited says it earned 50 cents per diluted share, up from 46 cents per diluted share a year ago.Analysts on average had expected a profit of 47 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters Eikon.Recipe Unlimited had 1,370 restaurants at Sept. 30, including 1,311 in Canada and 59 located internationally. Its brands includes Swiss Chalet, Harvey’s, St-Hubert, the Keg, Milestones, Montana’s, Kelsey’s, East Side Mario’s, New York Fries and others. The company opened 39 new restaurants in the 39 weeks up to Sept. 30, but closed 46 — excluding Casey’s closures as the company is in the process of winding down its operations.Follow @AleksSagan on Twitter.Companies in this story: (TSX:RECP) read more

Gandhi, accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi and senior Congress leaders K C Venugopal and Mukul Wasnik, submitted the papers before district collector A R Ajayakumar at Wayanad district headquarters here. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss bank a/c details Hundreds of workers of the Congress-led UDF assembled outside the district collectorate in Wayanad, a scenic hill area in the Western Ghats of Kerala, as Gandhi filed the nomination. Braving the scorching heat, thousands of party workers, including men, women and youth gathered in Kalpetta town and its suburbs to see the Congress’ prime ministerial candidate, who landed here to file his nomination from the constituency which has the presence of various ethnic tribal groups. Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from Thursday After completing the nomination procedures at the collectorate here, Rahul Gandhi along with Priyanka Gandhi and senior leaders of the Congress-led UDF in Kerala undertook a roadshow to greet the voters of this constituency. The narrow lanes of Kalpetta town were packed with excited onlookers waiting in anticipation for the Congress chief and other party leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi. Talking to reporters after filing his nomination, Rahul Gandhi said he was fighting the polls from down south to send a message that India was one. “I have come to Kerala to send a message that India is one. South, north, east, west, centre… all are one… There is an assault taking place across the country by the RSS and BJP. I just want to send a message and I will stand from south India and north India. My aim was to give a message,” he said. “There is a feeling in south India that the way the Narendra Modi government is functioning, their (south) culture, language, history all are being attacked. “So I wanted to give a message that I will fight from north and south,” the Congress chief said, in response to his main opponent in Amethi, Union minister Smriti Irani alleging that his decision to fight from Wayanad was an insult to the people of Amethi. Priyanka Gandhi appealed to the people of Wayanad to take care of her brother and assured that he would not let him down. “My brother, my truest friend, and by far the most courageous man I know. Take care of him Wayanad, he wont let you down,” she tweeted after the roadshow. Party workers shouted that they would ensure a thumping victory for Gandhi. “We all are excited. All sections of people gathered here to greet our prime ministerial candidate. We will ensure a thumping victory for Rahul ji from the soil of Pazhassi Raja,” Ashraf, a UDF worker, who came from Vandoor assembly constituency said. Gandhi said he would “absorb all the criticisms” of the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF in Kerala, which is miffed over his Wayanad candidature, and made it clear that he will not speak against the Left parties during his campaign. The CPI(M) and Congress have been locked in a fight in Kerala and it will go on, he told reporters, adding he wanted to send a message of unity. “The CPI(M) and Congress have been locked in a fight in Kerala. This will go on. I understand that the CPI(M) has to fight me. But I am not going to say a word against them. “I am here to send a message of unity that south India is important and I fully understand that the CPI(M) has to attack me. So I will absorb all their attacks with happiness, but from me you will not hear a word against them in my campaign,” Gandhi told reporters. He also said there were two main issues faced by the country–lack of jobs and agrarian crisis. “Farmers are unaware of what the future holds for them. Youngsters are running from state to state searching for jobs and (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi has failed on both the fronts,” he said while attacking the PM. Attacking Modi on the issue of corruption, the Congress leader said, “The country had faith on the prime minister when he said he would be the Chowkidar. But the Chowkidar himself has given Anil Ambani Rs 30,000 crore of Air Force money. “He (Modi) has stolen money and given it to Anil Ambani who has no experience. Anil Ambani is in Rs 45,000 crore debt,” Gandhi alleged, once again attacking the NDA government over the Rafale deal. As the massive crowd of supporters gathered on both sides of the narrow roads of Kalpetta, security personnel had a tough time controlling the people to clear the way for vehicles. Priyanka Gandhi wearing a mustard and red border saree and Rahul Gandhi waved to the crowd. As the vehicle inched forward, the Congress president was seen shaking hands with many elated supporters. People were seen clicking photos with their mobile phones and waving flags of Congress and its ally Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Heavy security was in place in and around the collectorate ahead of the high profile visit of the Congress chief. read more
New Delhi: The Indian Air Force Friday asserted that it had shot down an F-16 aircraft of the Pakistan Air Force on February 27 during aerial combat. “During the aerial engagement, one MiG 21 Bison of the IAF shot down an F-16 in Nowshera sector,” the IAF said in a statement. The assertion came after the Foreign Policy magazine reported Thursday that the US count of the F-16s with Pakistan has found that none of them are missing, contradicting India’s claim that one of its fighter jets shot down a Pakistani F-16 during an aerial dogfight on February 27.
Memphis Grizzlies vice president of basketball operations and team programs, Dana Davis, was found dead in his apartment, shocking an organization that relied on his acumen and infectious personality.Memphis Police were asked by team personnel to enter Davis’ Downtown apartment when he didn’t show up for work Wednesday. The cause of death is unknown. Foul play is not suspected.Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley was particularly shaken by the news. He and Davis, 56, known affectionately as “Double-D,” were close.“He was the most charitable human being I ever met in my life,” Heisley said. “I can’t handle it. It tears me up. He was almost like a son to me. I give millions of dollars to charity but he gave his life to it. When he wasn’t working for the Grizzlies, that’s all he thought about.”Davis was an only child to a white mother, Shirley Jean, and an African-American father, William “Mecie,” who was a musician. Davis recently became a member of the National Civil Rights Museum’s board of directors. Davis began as the Grizzlies’ traveling business manager but he evolved into a person responsible for more than just organizing plane rides, booking hotels and handing out per diem. He was described as part community activist, part fundraiser and part politician who had a knack for galvanizing people, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.Davis jokingly called himself “head flunky” and a “professional beggar.”“He was simply the heart and soul of the organization,” Fred Jones, founder of the Southern Heritage Classic told the Commercial Appeal. “He’s touched people in ways that have people calling from everywhere.”National Civil Rights Museum president Beverly Robertson added to the newspaper: “He came in with great enthusiasm. It would not be strange for me to get a call on a Saturday at 4 p.m. because he wanted me to talk to someone famous about the museum. He had the mission of this place at heart. I can’t tell you what a loss it will be to the museum. In many ways, he accepted Memphis as his new home.”Davis, from Peoria, Ill., once worked for eight years as business and tour manager for funk legend Bootsy Collins in the 1980s.“He was a man’s man. He was a champion,” said Willie Gregory, a close friend and the director of community/business investment for NIKE. “He was the face of the Grizzlies in Memphis. Whatever you needed done he would get it done. He got joy in helping people.”“He was a big part of this organization for a number of years,” coach Lionel Hollins said. “A lot of people depended on him. He enjoyed taking care of the players. It’s a big-time loss for our organization and a big-time loss for people who were close to him. He was a good, loyal friend. He meant a lot to a lot of people. We’re going to miss him.” read more
The Ohio State cross country teams take to the course Friday in Delaware, Ohio in the Cross Country All-Ohio Championship. The men’s team began the season with a first-place finish at the Mountaineer Open on Sept. 18th at Appalachian State University. The Buckeyes finished in six of the top 10 spots, claiming a large margin of victory over the competition. The team is No. 4 in the Great Lakes Region and has received votes to make the national top 30.Senior Jeff See, the standout runner for the men’s team, finished the race second overall.See may be a new name to followers of last year’s team because he sat the season out to “build up my fitness level … to compete in track and cross country at a higher level,” See said.It also made him eligible for a fifth year of participation next year. The team has high expectations for Friday’s meet, See said.“We think we can win this one … there are some good teams in Ohio, but we want to prove we are the best,” he said. The men’s team has had great success under coach Robert Gary, winning the All-Ohio Championship seven of the 12 years he has been head coach. The Buckeye runners and coaches have high hopes for the season, but the pressure is not affecting the runners.“We are putting a lot of pressure on ourselves to do well this year,” See said. “Having the public eye on us more this year will help keep the team in check.”The women’s team has also started the season impressively, finishing third at the Dayton Flyers 5k Challenge, in which the Buckeyes’ top runners did not compete. They finished second in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State. The team has already jumped four spots to number seven in the Great Lakes Region since the preseason rankings came out.The women’s team has made all of this progress without top runner Sarah Foster, who injured her ankle very early in the season. In her first race back, Foster took first place overall at the 5k Cedarville Friendship Invitational. “I didn’t have to run at Cedarville, but I wanted to get a race in before All-Ohio,” Foster said.Distance coach Chris Neal is confident in the depth of this year’s team compared to previous teams, saying that “it is nice knowing that Foster does not have to be at her best every meet for the team to win.”The depth Neal emphasized was evident at the Penn State meet when juniors Jordan Jennewine and Ellen Birmingham and senior Katie Williams finished second, third, and fifth respectively.“Jennewine will be one of our go-to girls this season,” Neal said. “Those three are our most consistent in practice.”The team expects first place at the All-Ohio Championships this weekend, Neal said.“If you talk to the team, anything less than a win would be a disappointment.” Foster said. “With me back and winning All-Ohio, it would … show that we are ready.”The Buckeyes have not had much luck at the All-Ohio Championships the past two years, taking 10th overall last season and 11th overall in 2007. The 2007 11th-place finish broke a streak of four straight second-place finishes at the meet. Something that may help the Buckeyes is a 40 percent chance of rain this Friday. Neal said the team is “better when it’s muddy like at Penn State.”The team’s overall goal for the year is to “continue to move up in the conference and finish in the top half of the Big Ten … and get to the National Championship Meet,” he said.“We need to get some points at the pre-nationals to help us make it to the nationals,” Foster said. “We think we can finish third in the region, but we want second to secure a spot in the national championship meet.”With both teams eyeing the NCAA Championship meet at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana, this weekend will play a vital role in the morale of both teams who expect to take first place. “It really helps to have the support of people around Columbus and Ohio State,” Foster said. “We have a chance to make Ohio State history Friday by winning All-Ohio for the first time.”The women’s varsity race is at 2 p.m. and the men’s varsity is at 2:45 p.m. near the Methodist Theological School and Delaware Golf Club in Delaware, Ohio. read more

Jake Palet would have been out on a baseball field on this Thursday afternoon with his father and older brother helping to coach the young players on the Bonita Vista High School baseball team. His father Dave, the head coach of the Barons was thrilled that Jake was taking on the role of his assistant. The team was only two practices into the season, when tragedy struck.Last October, Jake took a pill which he thought was Xanax, a medication he took occasionally to fight the feelings of depression and anxiety. After taking the pill, Jake died. The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death was caused by “accidental fentanyl intoxication.” Fentanyl is so powerful that even a tiny quantity equal to a few grains of salt can be deadly.Jake’s father said the question of who gave his son the fentanyl laced pill is still under investigation. Josh Palet, Jake’s brother said there’s a lesson for others.“Unless it’s prescribed, don’t take anything. It could be laced with fentanyl. It could be laced with anything. Don’t take it, don’t even think about taking it. My brother thought he was just going to take a Xanax and go to sleep and he never woke up again,” Palet said. It’s now almost six months since Jake’s death, and the family’s grief still feels like a heavy weight. As his father told us, “For us, being on this baseball field a couple hours a day, it’s the only time, where it feels normal. Of course we miss him, but we know he would be here with us too and that’s the one thing that makes us feel closest to him.”Jake was one of the 90 people in San Diego County in 2018 whose death was caused by the opioid, fentanyl. A new bill in the California legislature may make it easier for consumers to get their devices repaired. James Martin/CNET An Apple representative is warning California lawmakers that they should reject legislation designed to make it easier for consumers to repair their own electronics, because the consumers might wind up hurting themselves, Motherboard reported Tuesday.California’s Right to Repair bill would require manufacturers of electronics to make repair information, diagnostic tools and service parts available to device owners and independent repair shops. Assembly Bill 1163 was introduced in March by California State Assembly member Susan Talamantes Eggman, who introduced a similar bill last year.”The Right to Repair will provide consumers with the freedom to have their electronic products and appliances fixed by a repair shop or service provider of their choice, creating a competitive market that will be cheaper for consumers and reduce the number of devices thrown in the trash,” Eggman, a Democrat from Stockton, said in a statement.Several states have introduced similar legislation in recent years to ease the process of repairing broken electronics. But many tech giants have opposed such efforts. To protect against intellectual property theft, they’ve created rigid rules that forbid fiddling with hardware or software.Proponents say right to repair laws would benefit consumers and the environment alike by ensuring devices last longer, thus reducing electronic waste. But Apple’s representative and a lobbyist from the tech trade group CompTIA have shown lawmakers the internal components of an iPhone, Motherboard reports. They told lawmakers that consumers trying to repair their own handset could hurt themselves by puncturing the lithium-ion battery, anonymous sources told Motherboard. However, there have been signs things may be changing. An internal Apple presentation from last year, leaked to Motherboard, details how the iPhone maker plans to allow outside technicians access to diagnostic apps and more parts for its devices. The result, according to the report, would be that owners of Apple devices wouldn’t have to send their gadget to the company’s repair centers for complex work.Apple and CompTIA didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. Sarah Tew/CNET I’ll admit it, I’m nervous about giving Alexa permission to understanding my blood pressure readings. Then again, I don’t check my blood pressure enough, and I’m not the only one.Omron Healthcare’s blood-pressure-measuring watch, the HeartGuide, launched earlier this year. I wore it for a test drive. I have hypertension, and take medication. The watch helped me take a lot more readings than I’d normally do.Not everyone can afford a $500 blood pressure watch, though, and many people simply forget to monitor their blood pressure otherwise. Ranndy Kellogg, CEO of Omron Healthcare, says that the company’s latest push to add more voice-activated assistant skills via Alexa is, in part, because of seniors. “We think it’s a great avenue for getting information on heart health and reminding them to take blood pressure. Much better than a watch face or phone face. You or I might want a text message on our phone. They don’t.” Omron has had Alexa skills since late 2018, but Amazon’s new HIPAA-compliant health care skills that arrived in April now allow you to manage your data: A 30-day blood pressure report can be sent to your Omron account or as a PDF to the email address attached to the user’s Alexa account. Charts give observations on whether blood pressure is trending higher or lower than normal according to American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Cardiology (ACC) hypertension guidelines. It will also offer the beginnings of some insights similar to what are Omron’s HeartAdvisor app on its new watch. Alexa devices with screens can even get graphs of readouts. There are also reminders to check blood pressure. The HIPAA (US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) compliant skills on Alexa are invite only to certain businesses. Omron connects to Alexa and allows permissions through its app. Omron plans to expand these new voice assistant skills to other platforms next, including Google Assistant and Apple’s Siri. But for now they’re Alexa only, according to Kellogg. The Alexa skills still require that you have an Omron blood pressure-reading device that’s syncing data to Omron’s app. I haven’t tested the skills yet, but I’m curious how much the reminders and insights would help me be more aware. Without many wearable devices capable of taking blood pressure on the spot, these types of Alexa skills seem like a useful step. Alexa Amazon Tags 0 read more
