“This was driven by our own strategic view of where the industry is going,” Pettit said. “Associations have to bring together the pieces of an industry needed to develop the business models of the future, and allow members to align with where their customers are going, not align the communities of the past.”SIIA, based in Washington, D.C., was founded as the Software Publishers Association in 1984. In 1999, it merged with the Information Industry Association, and its membership includes both software developers and information providers such as Reed Elsevier, Pearson, McGraw-Hill and Scholastic and Thomson. It includes companies and entities that seem far afield from the ABM, such as the Stock Exchange of Thailand, TD Ameritrade, Kaplan Test Prep, Dell Software, Red Hat, the National Association of Electrical Distributors and Manufacturers Life Insurance. But SIIA also includes companies well known in the ABM community, such as Advanstar and a host of vendors, some of whom might have become SIIA members through the merger of SIPA—the Specialized Information Publishers Association—with SIIA last fall. As much as the merger represents a cold-eyed assessment of where the b-to-b media industry is going, it also is an indication that ABM was no longer viable as a standalone association, which in itself speaks volumes about the ongoing changes in media. The announcement comes one day after UBM’s Tech Group revealed a massive restructuring that included the complete abandonment of print media and layoffs said to number in the hundreds that affected editorial staff most acutely. “This could be the single biggest decimation of editorial resources in b-to-b history,” one source said yesterday. Pettit himself acknowledged that ABM was in a difficult position. “Over the long term, ABM would not have been financially sustainable,” he said. “The industry doesn’t need less value from its association, they need more. You’re going to see more and more of this.” Added Lapin, “You look at the convergence of business models and channels to reach our audiences, and what our customers are using, and it really dictates that ABM in the long term could not continue to do what it was doing. We are at an intersection of business information and data and technology. We wanted to get everyone in the same house in order to have some collaboration. We’re creating labs that create new business models of the future.”Still, Pettit stressed, the ABM brand will remain as a unit of SIIA, and even as it integrates with SIIA’s Content Division, the ABM name will be retained. ABM staff is staying in place, and the New York office will be kept open. For the moment too, Pettit said, other things will remain the same: Dues, governance, structure. ABM events will continue as well, but ABM members will have access to all SIIA events. Pettit said the merger is the result of 18 months of work by the ABM board and senior staff. SIIA, Pettit said, is very b-to-b focused. It has significant scale. It is financially rock solid and it has a shared view of the protection of intellectual property and b-to-b content, Pettit added. “You try to create an industry model that reflects where the industry is going,” he said. “We firmly believe that associations need to lead their industries to the right model. We kept coming back to SIIA as the best option.” SIIA, with about 750 total members (about 1,000 with the addition of ABM), has about 100 in the Content Division, one of six semi-standalone units. The others are Education, Software, Financial Information Services, Public Sector Innovation and SIPA.Pettit himself will be guiding the integration of ABM into the Content Division through September and evaluate next steps at that point. American Business Media is merging with the Software and Information Industry Association, ending 107 years of independence for the b-to-b media trade association. The merger was effective with a vote by the board last night. The move, said ABM CEO Clark Pettit and Chairman Jeff Lapin, was initiated by SIIA and creates a much larger association that is better positioned to serve an emerging industry, rather than the one that existed in the past.Update: While both association boards have unanimously approvedthe merger, it is still subject to an ABM member vote, which will betaken at ABM’s Annual Conference at the end of this month. A two-thirdsmajority is needed for final approval. But though Europe recognizes the threat, it’s not convinced that the US’ approach of shutting Huawei out is the best way to deal with the problem. On Wednesday, as Germany was discussing how to handle the matter, government sources told Reuters that while the country wanted to ensure that rigorous security measures were in place, a blanket ban on Huawei might not be the way to go.”It would narrow the choice of vendors,” Dieter Kempf, head of the Federation of German Industry (BDI) told Reuters. “That could affect costs. More importantly, there would be political consequences — China could be tempted to retaliate against German companies.”On Thursday, the Italian government shot down reports that it would ban Huawei, as well as rival Chinese phone company ZTE, in its 5G rollout, according to Reuters. “We have no intention of adopting any such initiatives,” said a spokesperson in a statement.Unlike in the US, Huawei has an established presence in Europe, not just as a network infrastructure provider, but also as one of the top phone manufacturers across the continent. Even before warnings from the US, however, the company was facing challenges in the region. In December, UK telecoms provider BT said it would strip Huawei tech from its 4G infrastructure by 2020 and pledged not to make the firm’s equipment the core of 5G. Similarly, both Andrus Ansip, the EU’s technology chief, and UK spy agency GCHQ warned that Huawei and other Chinese companies could pose a risk to industry and security. But none have taken the same hardline as the US just yet, though Japan and Australia have.Whether countries across the European bloc heed warnings from across the Atlantic and ban Huawei, US intervention in one of the company’s biggest market is only likely to increase tension in the ongoing war between the two.Huawei didn’t respond to a request for comment.First published Feb. 6 at 3:05 p.m. PT.Update Feb. 7 at 4:37 a.m. PT: Adds details and quote about Italy.Taking It to Extremes: Mix insane situations — erupting volcanoes, nuclear meltdowns, 30-foot waves — with everyday tech. Now playing: Watch this: The US has taken a stand against Huawei, and now it wants other countries to follow suit. While countries across Europe prepare for the rollout of 5G, the US State Department is discouraging them from using equipment made by the Chinese tech company, according to a Tuesday report by Reuters. The publication said US officials had met with representatives from the European Commission and the Belgian government to warn them that the Chinese government could use Huawei kit for spying.”The US advocates for secure telecoms networks and supply chains that are free from suppliers subject to foreign government control or undue influence that poses risks of unauthorized access and malicious cyber activity,” said a State Department spokesman in a statement. “We routinely urge allies and partners to consider such risks and exercise similar vigilance in ensuring the security of their own telecoms networks and supply chains, including when awarding contracts.”The move follows over a month of escalating tensions between the US and Huawei that’s seen the arrest of the company’s CFO in Canada (with possible extradition to the US on the cards) and 23 indictments thrust on the company by the United States. Preceding this was a year of warnings from the US against Huawei, for fear of the company’s coziness with the Chinese government, which raised concerns over espionage. 2:11 Post a comment Huawei Share your voice 0 Tags Huawei Mate 20 Pro phone has a ton of crazy extras Tech Industry read more

Map of Tanzania locating Lake Victoria, where a ferry capsized Thursday. Photo: AFPThe death toll in a ferry capsize in Lake Victoria climbed to more than 100 on Friday, as Tanzanian rescue workers pressed on with searches to find scores of more people feared drowned. The MV Nyerere may have been carrying as many as 200 passengers—double the ferry’s capacity—when it capsized close to the pier on Ukara Island on Thursday, according to reports on state media.Witnesses reached by AFP said the ferry sank when passengers rushed to one side to disembark as it approached the dock. The death toll rose to over 100 on Friday, according to Tanzania’s police chief Simon Sirro, cited by state radio TBC Taifa.Mwanza governor John Mongella had earlier said the number of survivors was 40, but it was unclear whether any new survivors had been found since rescue operations resumed with police and army divers on Friday morning.“Operations are continuing,” he said.Rescue operations were suspended overnight and hopes are fading that more survivors might still be found, a day after the vessel sank.State television cited witnesses reporting that more than 200 people had boarded the ferry at Bugolora, a town on the larger Ukerewe Island, where it was market day when locals said the vessel was usually packed with people and goods.“I have not heard from either my father or my younger brother who were on the ferry. They had gone to the market in Bugolora to buy a school uniform and other supplies for the new school term,” said Domina Maua, who was among those seeking information about loved ones.Davita Ngenda, an elderly woman in Ukara, had already received bad news. “My son is among the bodies recovered,” she said, weeping. “He had gone with his wife but she has not been found yet. My God, what did I do to deserve this?”Sebastian John, a teacher, said such tragedies had become part of life for those living on the lake.“Since my birth, people have gone to their deaths on this lake, but what are we to do? We did not choose to be born here, we have nowhere to go,” he said.It remains unclear how many people are still missing.Overloading and ‘negligence’ -Tanzania’s Electrical, Mechanical and Services Agency, which is responsible for ferry services, said it was unknown how many passengers were aboard the MV Nyerere. The ageing ferry, whose hull and propellers were all that remained visible after it overturned, was also carrying cargo, including sacks of maize, bananas and cement, when it capsized around 50 metres (55 yards) from Ukara dock. The cause of the accident was not immediately clear, but overloading is frequently to blame for such incidents.President John Magufuli was “deeply saddened” by the disaster and called on Tanzanians to “stay calm during these difficult times,” according to spokesman Gerson Msigwa. The country’s opposition, however, accused the government of “negligence”.“We have often raised concerns about the poor condition of this ferry, but the government turned a deaf ear. We have repeatedly denounced this negligence,” said John Mnyika, deputy secretary general of Chadema, the main opposition party.Mnyika said overloading was “another failure of the authorities” and criticised “inadequate relief efforts as well as delays” in the rescue operation. With a surface area of 70,000 square kilometres (27,000 square miles), oval-shaped Lake Victoria is roughly the size of Ireland and is shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.Capsizes are not uncommon in the massive lake, and the number of fatalities is often high due to a shortage of life jackets and the fact that many people in the region cannot swim. The deadliest such accident in recent decades was in May 1996, when around 800 people died after their ferry sank on the way to Mwanza in Tanzania.Waters in the lake can be rough and boats are frequently poorly maintained, while ferry operators often fail to record the number of passengers on board.Around 20 people were killed in December 2016 when their boat overturned in Lake Victoria as it was carrying passengers to Uganda’s mainland for Christmas holidays. And in March 2012, only two survivors were found after a boat believed to be carrying around 60 people capsized on the lake in Uganda. read more

DOI: 10.1038/s41567-018-0106-zAbstractSand is blown across beaches and deserts by turbulent winds. This seemingly chaotic process creates two dominant bedforms: decametre-scale dunes and centimetre-scale ripples, but hardly anything in between. By the very same process, grains are constantly sorted. Smaller grains advance faster, while heavier grains trail behind. Here, we argue that, under erosive conditions, sand sorting and structure formation can conspire to create distinct bedforms in the ‘forbidden wavelength gap’ between aeolian ripples and dunes. These so-called megaripples are shown to co-evolve with an unusual, predominantly bimodal grain-size distribution. Combining theory and field measurements, we develop a mechanistic understanding of their formation, shape and migration, as well as their cyclic ageing, renewal and sedimentary memory, in terms of the intermittent wind statistics. Our results demonstrate that megaripples exhibit close similarities to dunes and can indeed be mechanistically characterized as a special type of (‘reptation’) dune. Curiosity rover’s sand-dune studies yield surprise Citation: A theoretical analysis of sand mega-ripples (2018, May 1) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2018-05-theoretical-analysis-sand-mega-ripples.html A team of researchers from several institutions in Germany and Israel has used theoretical analysis to explain the conditions under which mega-ripples form in areas where sand dunes rise. In their paper published in the journal Nature Physics, the group describes combining field measurements with theory to come up with an explanation for mega-ripples. N. M. Vriend and P. A. Jarvis with the University of Cambridge offer a News & Views piece on the work done by the team in the same journal issue. Most people have seen pictures, video or firsthand vistas of deserts with sand dunes. Such deserts, it has been noted, form dunes in just one average size, which are often characterized by ripples. However, the researchers note that there is an exception—sometimes, there are smaller, dune-like bedforms that are larger than ripples. They are called mega-ripples because some believe they are merely a larger version of the ripples that normally occur on dunes. In this new effort, the researchers sought to learn more about mega-ripples through serious study.Prior study has shown that dunes and ripples form when wind blows sand around. Sand forms due to erosion. Dunes form when there is instability between the transport of sand, and the topography and the speed at which the wind blows. The variations between these factors is what causes the differences in size between dunes in different deserts. Ripples, on the other hand, are formed by more subtle forces, such as grains of sand that hop around rather than fly in the wind—ripple spacing is defined by hop length. The researchers wanted to know about mega-ripples. What causes them to form, and why are they so rare? To find out, they built a model to replicate what occurs naturally, and then changed factors until mega-ripples formed. The strongest factor influencing the development of mega-ripples, the team found, was grain size under erosive conditions. In areas where there is moderate but constant wind, grain sorting occurs, leaving coarser grains behind due to their weight. Those grains can pile up and develop into mega-ripples. But not for very long, because weather conditions change. For this reason, the researchers have declared mega-ripples to be a type of dune, not a large ripple. This document is subject to copyright. Of course, it’s still very early, and it will take years before the contact lenses can function as promised directly on a human eye, as Gizmodo points out.For now, the prototype is only operational on a special rig that employs several components. These components will have to be radically miniaturized before a human can wear it. Even still, it demonstrates what’s possible with current technology.Hands-Free ControlBeing able to control something using hands-free gestures isn’t something particularly innovative, but implementing that system in the context of contact lenses is potentially groundbreaking. This approach has been used to allow people with very limited body movement to control and steer a wheelchair, for example. The team believes this could be used to do a number of things besides just zooming on command. For example, by looking down, the wearer can automatically adjust the lenses’ focus on near objects, such as the words on a page in a book. Then glancing back up would automatically adjust the focus as well.Again, there’s a lot of work to be done before people can take advantage of such a technology. Right now, it’s very likely few people would be willing to walk around with electrodes stuck all over their faces, so the scientists first have to refine the prototype into something more user-friendly. In other words, they have to find a way to integrate all the electronics into the lens themselves, which already sounds like a tall order that will require some major funding.Just to offer some perspective, even a company as massive as Google gave up on making a smart contact lens to monitor blood sugar levels. Which is to say it’s best to taper expectations. Still, it’s awfully difficult not to get excited given the implications of this new technology. Wearers can “command” the lenses to zoom in or out just by blinking twice, for instance. The biometric lenses are made of flexible polymer films that respond to the electric signals the wearer’s eyes generate when they move. It’s also a feature of some of the tea party-backed Republicans in both the Senate and the House. Taken to extremes it can amount to an isolationist worldview and Paul has softened some stances as he campaigns for president.“Montana has a very populist streak, wary of big government,” Daines said in explaining his stance. “It’s not necessarily a Republican or Democrat issue … it crosses the partisan divide.”The USA Freedom Act would preserve the NSA’s ability to query phone company records in search of terror connections, while maintaining other surveillance powers set to expire. But it looks short of votes to pass, as does a two-month extension of existing law supported by Senate GOP leaders. That’s left Senate leaders weighing a potentially even shorter extension. Without congressional action, bulk collection and all the other programs within the Patriot Act expire at the end of this month. For some of the Republicans allying themselves with Democrats on the USA Freedom Act, it’s not an entirely comfortable place to be. Lee sent out a mass email to supporters on Thursday asking them to sign a petition opposing the NSA, claiming that “liberals” were seeking to continue government spying — even though it’s his own party’s leaders who want to keep the current program running unchecked. And Cruz responded to a reporter’s question about the unusual coalition on the issue by remarking: “I certainly hope we see a whole lot more Republicans” joining those like him who back the USA Freedom Act.Yet similar left-right coalitions could resurface on other issues, including medical marijuana and criminal sentencing reform. Paul and Leahy are already working together on a bill, opposed by key Republicans, to limit the use of mandatory minimum sentences.“It’s just a reality we have to deal with. Martin Heinrich of New Mexico said after backing Paul up on the floor. “It’s not a left-right thing — it’s as true in Taos, N.M., as it is in Kentucky.” WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress’ debate over domestic surveillance is scrambling partisan divisions in the Senate as libertarian-minded Republicans defy their leaders to make common cause with liberal Democrats.Tea party conservative Sen. Mike Lee of Utah is pairing with liberal stalwart Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont to push for Senate passage of the USA Freedom Act, which would end the National Security Agency’s collection and storage of domestic calling records after a six-month transition period. Already approved by the House on a large bipartisan vote, the bill could come to a vote in the Senate on Friday, but is opposed by GOP leaders who prefer to extend the existing call collection program unaltered. FHFA Home Prices Housing Market 2016-04-21 Staff Writer Home Price Gains Slow to a Crawl Although home prices continued their upward trek all over the country, they are doing so at a much slower pace, according to data on the recent U.S. House Price Index (HPI) released by the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA).The report showed a national 0.4 percent month-over-month increase from January to February, and a 5.6 percent annual jump between February 2015 and February 2016.January’s HPI report showed a 0.5 percent increase, which was revised downward to reflect a 0.4 percent increase.Geographically, pricing changes varied, with a month-over-month 0.7 decrease in the South Atlantic census division, which includes Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, the FHFA reported. The Middle Atlantic division (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania) experienced a 1.7 percent increase from January 2016 to February 2016.The 12-month changes were all positive, in the New England division (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut) and the Pacific division (Hawaii, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California), rising 2.5 percent to 8.4 percent, respectively. In the midst of what some are calling a global crisis—due to weaknesses in the energy sector and stock market combined with the effects of an overly strong U.S. dollar—home prices continue to move upward. Despite this however the housing sector is just not large enough to carry the weight of the world. The S&P/Case-Shiller U.S. National Home Price Index (HPI) released Tuesday found that home prices rose for the 43rd consecutive month in November 2015. According to the HPI report, home prices rose 5.3 percent year-over-year in November, slightly up from the 5.1 percent increase recorded in October 2015.“Home prices extended their gains, supported by continued low mortgage rates, tight supplies and an improving labor market,” said David M. Blitzer, Managing Director and Chairman of the Index Committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices. “Sales of existing homes were up 6.5 percent in 2015 vs. 2014, and the number of homes on the market averaged about a 4.8 months’ supply during the year; both numbers suggest a seller’s market.”As housing demand continues to rise, interest rates remain at historical lows, credit conditions ease, and the labor market improves, home price growth continues to climbs but for how much longer? An analysis from Capital Economics projects that the Federal Reserve will be modest in interest rate increases and home prices will increase by a forecasted 6 percent in 2016. In addition, home price gains will be more modest in 2017 at 4 percent, prior to rising interest rates lead to a complete economic slowdown in 2018.”That profile for house price gains is above consensus for both 2016 and 2017, which is for gains of under 4 percent,” the report stated. “But our forecast is below consensus for 2018, where our expectation for prices to hold steady compares to a consensus view of a gain of 3 percent.” in Daily Dose, Data, Headlines, News April 21, 2016 573 Views Share read more

Tavis Smiley statement on PBS investigation of misconduct by The Associated Press Posted Dec 14, 2017 6:11 am PDT Last Updated Dec 14, 2017 at 6:40 am PDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email Talk show host Tavis Smiley released the following statement on Facebook on Wednesday after allegations of misconduct:“On the eve of the 15th season and 3,000th episode of my nightly talk show, I was as shocked as anyone else by PBS’ announcement today. Variety knew before I did.I have the utmost respect for women and celebrate the courage of those who have come forth to tell their truth. To be clear, I have never groped, coerced, or exposed myself inappropriately to any workplace colleague in my entire broadcast career, covering 6 networks over 30 years.Never. Ever. Never.PBS launched a so-called investigation of me without ever informing me. I learned of the investigation when former staffers started contacting me to share the uncomfortable experience of receiving a phone call from a stranger asking whether, I had ever done anything to make them uncomfortable, and if they could provide other names of persons to call. After 14 seasons, that’s how I learned of this inquiry, from the streets.Only after being threatened with a lawsuit, did PBS investigators reluctantly agree to interview me for three hours. If having a consensual relationship with a colleague years ago is the stuff that leads to this kind of public humiliation and personal destruction, heaven help us. The PBS investigators refused to review any of my personal documentation, refused to provide me the names of any accusers, refused to speak to my current staff, and refused to provide me any semblance of due process to defend myself against allegations from unknown sources. Their mind was made up. Almost immediately following the meeting, this story broke in Variety as an ‘exclusive.’ Indeed, I learned more about these allegations reading the Variety story than the PBS investigator shared with me, the accused, in our 3 hour face to face meeting. My attorneys were sent a formal letter invoking a contractual provision to not distribute my programming, and that was it.Put simply, PBS overreacted and conducted a biased and sloppy investigation, which led to a rush to judgment, and trampling on a reputation that I have spent an entire lifetime trying to establish. This has gone too far. And, I, for one, intend to fight back. It’s time for a real conversation in America, so men and women know how to engage in the workplace. I look forward to actively participating in that conversation.” read more
police department Other features slated to play at Sundance include Matt Ruskin’s Crown Heights based on the true story of a Brooklyn man falsely convicted of murder and the fraternity-hazing drama Burning Sands starring Moonlight’s Trevante Rhodes and directed by Gerard McMurray an associate producer of Ryan Coogler’s 2013 Fruitvale StationFor now though those movies are just titles with names attached How will we feel at the end of 2017 after we’ve seen them The final months of 2016 have been a viper’s nest of anxiety accusations and posturing with comers from all sides Suddenly there’s a rift between white working-class Americans and those they view as condescending coastal liberals–or rather a rift has been steadily growing and too many were too slow to see it This divide hasn’t hit the world of movies at least not in any immediately visible way But the specter of white supremacy has to be on filmmakers’ minds How destructive a force will it be That’s a question no one can answer right nowThe way forward and perhaps the only way to avoid madness is to think less about people who would like to obstruct progress and more about pushing forward In late January 2016 in the wake of #OscarsSoWhite the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made an official move to diversify: its goal was to double the number of women and minorities in its ranks by 2020 What’s more the Academy’s board instituted changes to the criteria used to determine members’ voting eligibility requiring each member’s status to be reviewed every 10 years In other words if you’re an old-timer who hasn’t been active in the industry for decades you’ll have to meet certain standards to maintain voting rightsThe Academy too long a petrified forest with numbingly predictable tastes needed to be modernized diversified and electrified and maybe these changes will help when it comes to honoring good work in the industry But what about the movies themselves Is there any way they can unify our cleft nation or are we doomed to a future of filmgoing tastes divided between so-called cultural elitism and populism Are we looking at a future of living inside one roiling angry comments sectionMaybe it’s useful or at least comforting to remember that movies aren’t always what we want them to be when we need them to be Today Sidney Lumet’s 1957 drama 12 Angry Men in which a jury holdout played by Henry Fonda tries to persuade his fellow jurors all white of an 18-year-old Puerto Rican boy’s innocence in the killing of his father is considered a classic of cherished liberal ideals But as Pauline Kael pointed out in an essay written over 50 years ago "Ask an educated American what he thought of 12 Angry Men and more likely than not he will reply ‘That movie made some good points’ or ‘It got some important ideas across’ His assumption" Kael writes "is that it carried these ideas which also happen to be his ideas to the masses Actually it didn’t: this tense ingenious juryroom melodrama was a flop with the mass audience a success only at revivals in art houses"Movies have lives beyond anything we can imagine for them upon their release That’s true whether they’re flops or hits whether they reach the mainstream immediately or eventually or never The movie landscape of 2016 was better than many of us expected it to be but there’s a danger in viewing the past year’s movies–as terrific as so many of them were–as any sort of sign of great progress We can always do better Complacency and self-congratulation are so 2016 Last year and the year before and maybe even every year before that we thought we were stepping up to the plate Let’s see what happens now that we really have a plate to step up toWith the aid of a teleprompter Donald Trump on Tuesday repeated the defiant anthem of his campaign: selfish businesses are sending American jobs overseas and politicians have let it happen by approving bad trade policies “Our politicians have aggressively pursued a policy of globalization moving our jobs our wealth and our factories to Mexico and overseas” Trump said in a speech in Monessen Pennsylvania “Ladies and gentlemen it is time to declare our economic independence once again” He said the United States should rip up its current trade deals if it cannot renegotiate them and crack down on “cheaters” It was the most aggressive portrait of American economic policy Trump has yet given one that squared with his campaign slogan “America First” But that is not a vision Trump has always had In a blog post written just three years ago Trump called for global unity and international economic interdependence writing that there were important opportunities to do business in Europe And in a 2005 essay Trump said that outsourcing jobs is “not always a terrible thing” arguing for a more nuanced view of shipping jobs out of the United States Trump’s views in those two posts bear little resemblance to his apocalyptic view of globalization today Though Trump has long railed against bad trade deals his call on Tuesday for America to cut off much of its commerce with the rest of the world is at odds with his past optimism about international economic cooperation In the aftermath of the global financial crisis Trump wrote in 2013 said that businesses could work in a more unified world Trump advocated for “global unity” and abandoning borders “We will have to leave borders behind and go for global unity when it comes to financial stability” Trump wrote “The near meltdown we experienced a few years ago made it clear that our economic health depended on dependence on each other to do the right thing” he wrote “We are now closer to having an economic community in the best sense of the termwe work with each other for the benefit of all” He wrote that Europe presented a good investment option for American businesses “Europe is a terrific place for investment” Trump wrote “I am proud to have built a great golf course in Scotland after searching throughout Europe for five years for the right location I’ve seen many beautiful places” By contrast Trump on Tuesday called for an agenda of “America first” also the name of a interventionist organization opposed to entering World War II “America changed its policy from promoting development in America in in in America to promoting development in other nations” Trump said “We have become more dependent on foreign countries than ever before” And Trump charged politicians with helping American companies to move overseas “Our politicians took away from the people their means of making a living and supporting their families” he said on Tuesday “Skilled craftsmen and tradespeople and factory workers have seen the jobs they love shipped thousands and thousands of miles away” But in 2005 Trump explained the merits of outsourcing jobs “We hear terrible things about outsourcing jobs how sending work outside of our companies is contributing to the demise of American businesses” Trump wrote in 2005 “But in this instance I have to take the unpopular stance that it is not always a terrible thing” Trump has spoken in the past about how Americans are getting “ripped off” by foreign countries and bad trade negotiations but he has built much of his financial empire through international brands that rely on foreign labor Much of Trump-branded products including his suits ties light fixtures furniture picture frames and other business lines are made overseas The Clinton campaign has repeatedly attacked Trump for moving jobs abroad It has become a key pillar of their campaign: that Trump has hurt American workers through his businesses practices in particular by moving jobs overseas “He’s been a hypocrite when it comes to talking about made in America and then outsourcing jobs” Sen Sherrod Brown of Ohio a prominent Clinton ally said on a conference call with reporters on Tuesday “The reality is Donald Trump lines his pockets at expense of American workers period” Trump said in 2005 that business often need to move overseas to remain competitive “I know that doesn’t make it any easier for people whose jobs have been outsourced overseas but if a company’s only means of survival is by farming jobs outside its walls then sometimes it’s a necessary step” Trump wrote then “The other option might be to close its doors for good” “Losing jobs is never a good thing but we have to look at the bigger picture” Trump wrote Contact us at editors@timecomPop star Selena Gomez is a high-fashion femme fatale in her music video for “Kill Em With
