Most people have seen a video of a single drop of water hit a puddle in slow motion, but have you ever seen a tuning fork hit that same puddle? More importantly, have you see that tuning fork hit that water more than 25x slower than your eyes can see it on their own?Despite being a terribly inefficient way to get through the day, it seems like being able to watch the world pass by in slow motion would be an incredible experience. We often miss some really incredible experiences around up because they happen way too fast for us to really appreciate them. Slow motion cameras give up the ability to enjoy some of what we’re missing, and when you hand one of those cameras to The Slow Mo Guys it’s pretty much a guarantee that you’ll see something fun.Studies have shown that the average human can see the world at a little more than 60 fps. That gives us the ability to soak up a lot of information, but there’s still a lot going that our eyes just can’t see. When the tuning fork hits the water in this video, the camera is able to record 1600 frames every second. In that time, you can see the individual water droplets as they are scattered about. You can also see the water as it climbs up in between the two tines of the fork as vibrations toss the water violently back and forth. All our eyes see is a quick splash with a little bit of noise, but the camera is able to capture thousands of frames where the water seems to dance all around the cup. When the fork is removed, the surface of the water takes nearly a full second to return to being completely calm, during that time there’s more going on than what our eyes can see. read more
Major Nelson has already spent some time unboxing the Day One edition of the Xbox One console, but he didn’t go into too much detail about the individual components in the box. That changes today with the focus moving to the Xbox One controller.Microsoft has released a video that sees Major Nelson and General Manager of Xbox accessories Zulfi Alam spend 7 minutes breaking down how the Xbox One controller has been improved over the already great Xbox 360 controller. And there’s been some interesting changes been made.Overall it looks as though the Xbox One controller will be more comfortable to hold for extended periods of time due to the new screwless design. Microsoft has also taken the time to fix the biggest problem with the 360 controller: that D-pad. The height has been reduced and the shape changed to be a much more pleasant experience. We’ve also got improved thumbsticks that are slightly smaller, a softer feel to them, and the dead zones have been reduced significantly.Microsoft is definitely catering to the pro gaming scene with the D-pad and thumbstick improvements, but they didn’t stop there. The Micro USB port on the top of the controller can be used to switch over to a true wired mode, where the wireless connection is shutdown completely. But even if you don’t want to plug a wire in, Microsoft is claiming 20x more bandwidth over wireless and an input latency reduction of 20 percent over the 360 wireless controller. Impressive stuff. The most interesting new feature has to be those haptic feedback triggers, though. Basically Microsoft has shrunk two of the rumble packs already used in the controller and hooked them up to the triggers. Developers can control them individually, and it is being claimed they can help the player tell the difference between weapons when fired, or understand how a car is driving in a racing game more accurately. All this sounds great, but we’ll have to wait and see if they actually translate into a better control experience. Roll on November, when the reviews will start arriving and we get a verdict. read more
Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Greece’s Education Minister Giorgos Babiniotis threatened to resign over his attempt to bypass university reform, which has caused yet another blow for Greece’s interim government.Meanwhile, PASOK and New Democracy have upped their election campaign machines.Mr Babiniotis, an academic who was sworn in less than a month ago, drew criticism from politicians and the media when he attempted to clear state funding for universities even though they had not complied with reforms passed by PASOK and ND last summer. The legislation demands that universities elect administration committees to oversee the management of their finances and other operational aspects but the institutions have failed to do this.Former Education Minister Anna Diamantopoulou, who now holds the development portfolio, is said to have been one of the government members that reacted most strongly to Babiniotis’s attempt to bypass the university law. Sources said she called Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, who appointed the university professor, to express her anger. Papademos then called Babiniotis to press him on the issue. The two men agreed that universities would be able to receive their funding for 2012 but that all aspects of the law would have to be implemented.Meanwhile, PASOK and ND stepped up their attempts to win over voters ahead of the polls, which are likely to take place on May 6. Speaking to conservative party members, ND leader Antonis Samaras stressed that he would take a hard line on the issue of illegal immigration.“Illegal immigrants are taking over our cities; we have to reclaim them,” he said. Sources said Samaras is looking to Nicolas Sarkozy’s presidential campaign in France for policy ideas before the Greek polls. Samaras, who had abandoned his challenge to the terms of Greece’s bailout over the past few months, expressed fresh opposition to some aspects of the agreement and claimed that he would make efforts to prevent further cuts to wages and pensions.PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos met with the members of his party’s election committee, who number almost 70, before holding talks with 11 top officials to discuss the Socialists’ strategy for the polls. Several ministers that were close allies of Venizelos’s predecessor, George Papandreou, were not invited to the meeting. read more
Evan Rachel Wood Just As Disturbed by Humanoid Sophia As Everyone ElseMIT’s Thread-Like Robot Slides Through Blood Vessels In the Brain Stay on target Home aquariums are a great hobby and a wonderful way for kids to learn about ecosystems. But fish tanks—like the creatures living inside them—require care and maintenance. The recommended fortnightly cleaning, however, is about to get a lot more fun.Imagine if you could shrink and waterproof a Roomba vacuum, strap on an HD camera, and stick it to the wall of your fishbowl: That’s exactly what Chinese startup MOAI did with its new pint-sized robot.“The original idea was a webcam for aquariums, so you can monitor your aquarium while not at home,” MOAI industrial designer Yoon Hoon told Digital Trends. “We found that algae build-up is a pain point for most aquarium owners, and so decided to combine camera and cleaner together.”Two years and eight prototypes later, “we’re finally satisfied.”Who’s watching who? (via MOAI)The device comes in two parts: an outside case (which houses an ultrasound radar and wide-angle lens) and an inside cleaning pad. Held together through the glass by a magnet, the external piece navigates, while the internal element dredges.A built-in navigation system tells the smart sweeper where it is on the aquarium, and where it has already cleaned; owners can set parameters—i.e. above sand bed—to prevent unwanted hoovering and scratches. The MOAI companion mobile app for iOS and Android, meanwhile, serves as a remote control, allowing users to schedule cleaning times and mark specific areas for swabbing.Set a cleaning schedule (via MOAI)It also provides high-definition insight into underwater liaisons; whether you’re in another room or on another continent, keep an eye on your fishy friends via 1080p video.“For the novice or the experienced hobbyists, MOAI is designed to enhance the natural beauty of aquascape even amidst a busy urban lifestyle,” the product website said, boasting 24/7 livestreaming and bookmarked images.Aquarium enthusiasts can pre-order the subaquatic cyborg—suitable for fresh or saltwater tanks—on Kickstarter for $199, with a delivery date of May 2018. read more

Jake Palet would have been out on a baseball field on this Thursday afternoon with his father and older brother helping to coach the young players on the Bonita Vista High School baseball team. His father Dave, the head coach of the Barons was thrilled that Jake was taking on the role of his assistant. The team was only two practices into the season, when tragedy struck.Last October, Jake took a pill which he thought was Xanax, a medication he took occasionally to fight the feelings of depression and anxiety. After taking the pill, Jake died. The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death was caused by “accidental fentanyl intoxication.” Fentanyl is so powerful that even a tiny quantity equal to a few grains of salt can be deadly.Jake’s father said the question of who gave his son the fentanyl laced pill is still under investigation. Josh Palet, Jake’s brother said there’s a lesson for others.“Unless it’s prescribed, don’t take anything. It could be laced with fentanyl. It could be laced with anything. Don’t take it, don’t even think about taking it. My brother thought he was just going to take a Xanax and go to sleep and he never woke up again,” Palet said. It’s now almost six months since Jake’s death, and the family’s grief still feels like a heavy weight. As his father told us, “For us, being on this baseball field a couple hours a day, it’s the only time, where it feels normal. Of course we miss him, but we know he would be here with us too and that’s the one thing that makes us feel closest to him.”Jake was one of the 90 people in San Diego County in 2018 whose death was caused by the opioid, fentanyl. SUNRISE, FLA. (WSVN) – Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has called for the resignation of the Department of Homeland Security secretary. She made the announcement Tuesday in a news release, where the democratic representative called for Kirstjen Nielsen’s resignation, who has been Homeland Security secretary since 2017.“While some Trump Administration officials brag about their heartless new child separation policy, Secretary Nielsen has repeatedly denied its existence,” said Wasserman Schultz in the news release. “Lying to the American people about the cruel way our government is treating children at the border makes her unfit to lead. Secretary Nielsen must resign and be replaced by someone who understands that tearing young children away from their parents is fundamentally un-American.”This news came ahead of Wasserman Schultz’s expected visit Tuesday to the child detention facility in Homestead alongside Florida Sen. Bill Nelson. Both, however, were denied entry.Copyright 2019 Sunbeam Television Corp. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. read more
Former President Barack Obama is using digital-media company ATTN: as a mouthpiece to reach millennials — with a new video aimed at getting young Americans to the polls for the Nov. 6 midterm elections.“Look, a lot of our elected officials are misinformed,” Obama says in the video. At another point, Obama ribs Republican senators who questioned Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg “like they’d never used the internet before… because they haven’t.”“Here’s your chance to vote for people who actually know what the internet is,” Obama says. “You wouldn’t let your grandparents pick your playlist. Why would you let them pick your representative who’s going to determine your future?”The full Obama get-out-the-vote video is available on ATTN:’s Facebook page and its YouTube channel, with a shorter version available on Instagram. ATTN: said the Obama video is not a paid political ad, and that the 4.5-minute segment was entirely funded and produced by the company. He’s the second high-profile Democrat that ATTN: has worked with on a get-out-the-vote initiative: Last month, it launched a new weekly political-issues series hosted by former VP Joe Biden on Instagram’s IGTV and other platforms, set to run through the November elections.True, the former president’s message is not overtly pushing a political agenda. But by aligning itself with Obama and Biden, ATTN: is showing its left-leaning sympathies — and making no bones about the fact that the media outlet “that entertains and informs” is dedicated to promoting progressive policies. And that’s on-brand for ATTN:, which co-founder Matthew Segal recently told Variety is aspiring to be “the HBO of mid-form content.”“We’re thrilled to have worked with President Obama on this video that also happens to have a critically important message for young voters,” Matthew Segal, ATTN:’s co-founder, said in a statement. “Public officials who understand the way media has evolved know that they need to get their message out to young voters on social media, and often through shareable, mobile-friendly videos.”In the new video, Obama shoots down seven common excuses for not voting, including “my vote doesn’t matter” and “midterm elections are boring.”Obama spokeswoman Katie Hill said the stakes are high in this year’s midterms elections, and “that’s why President Obama is delivering a message directly to young voters in this light-hearted, millennial-focused video: that contrary to internet myths, voting is the easiest and most powerful way for them to hold our elected officials accountable.”ATTN:, founded in 2014, has raised about $24 million from investors including Evolution Media Capital, Main Street Advisors, Marc Rowan and Paul Wachter.Listen to Variety’s “Strictly Business” podcast with ATTN:’s Matthew Segal: Popular on Variety ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Google patent proposes ad system (2013, August 18) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2013-08-pay-per-gaze-google-patent-ad.html (Phys.org) —Advertising models could in the future expand from clicks to pupil dilations. Google’s patent for a Gaze Tracking System became public last week. Originally filed in May 2011, the patent presents an idea for wearers of a head mounted device—and in 2013 observers are guessing this may be Google Glass—to have gaze tracked so that the system can pin down exactly what the user is looking at and even the emotional responses via pupil dilation. Information about where the user was gazing when viewing the external scene would be sent over to a server. Then the real work would start. An image recognition algorithm would be executed on the scene images to identify items within the external scenes viewed by the user. A gazing log tracking the identified items viewed by the user would be generated. Explore further Google patent suggests Google-Glass-ish control of appliances More information: Patent URLmarketingland.com/pay-per-gaze … g-google-glass-55714 What’s the benefit of translating images seen by the wearer of a head-mounted device into data logged on a server? “To date,” says the patent, “eye tracking systems have mostly been limited to research endeavors because of the intrusiveness, high cost, and reliability of these systems. A technique and system that can provide a reliable, low cost, and unobtrusive, eye tracking system could have a variety of useful everyday applications.”The usefulness is for Google and advertisers that flock to Google. Advertisers could be charged according to the number of views an ad received while wearing Glass, both offline and online. Google’s patent refers to the process as “pay-per-gaze” advertising.Of course, Google would not throw cereal boxes up on the screen each time a wearer tried to locate a restaurant, but instead would be setting up an advertising model of pay-per-gaze.The patent discusses how this would work: “Under a pay per gaze advertising scheme, advertisers are charged based upon whether a user actually viewed their advertisement. Pay per gaze advertising need not be limited to on-line advertisements, but rather can be extended to conventional advertisement media including billboards, magazines, newspapers, and other forms of conventional print media.” The system would involve “determining which, if any, of the identified items within the external scenes viewed by the user are advertisements; and charging advertisers associated with the advertisements based at least in part on a per gaze basis.”Needless to say, the patent’s idea, if it were to fly on a device such as Google Glass, would unleash no small amount of conversation, from alarm, to spirited debate between privacy experts, industry marketing experts and Google. In anticipation of privacy concerns, the patent proactively faces the issues: anonymized data and opt-out privileges are two suggestions.”To protect individual privacy, personal identifying data may be removed from the data and provided to the advertisers as anonymous analytics. In one embodiment, users may be given opt-in or opt-out privileges to control the type of data being gathered, when the data is being gathered, or how the gathered data may be used or with whom it may be shared.”The patent also suggests that individually identifying data be encrypted for communication between device and server system, to further protect privacy. Debate at this stage, though, is premature. The patent, for one, filed in 2011, never mentions Google Glass, only with reference to a head-mounted gaze tracking device. Most important, this is a patent, not a product announcement. Patents at times do develop into real products and services but others do not. Time will tell if this patent evolves into advertising’s new relationships with Google Glass. © 2013 Phys.org Google Glass read more

Source = e-Travel Blackboard: D.M Trafalgar is riding high on the success of its UK and Europe programme, announcing a new At Leisure itinerary with hopes to change market perception from coach touring to guided tours.Trafalgar announced Tuesday its new, diverse collection of over 100 itineraries, including an all new At Leisure style of guided holiday. At Leisure combines elements from guided holidays and weaves into it the essentials of independent travel, the company said. The new programme looks to build on strong forward bookings, which are up 70 per cent on 2009 levels and well above their record year in 2008. “Trafalgar is a niche product, competing with others but ours is very diverse with over 2,000 itineraries,” Trafalgar managing director, Paul McGrath said. Mr McGrath said At Leisure gives clients three things that they deemed were key: “Travellers want choice; freedom and flexibility; and authentic experiences.” “We need to be relevant with consumers and travel agents, and after focus groups we listened and now launch the new product in a new touring category. “We are changing our terminology, moving away from escorted tours to guided holidays – which is what it really is. “Cruising is the fastest growing market and we believe At Leisure is that conversation we need to have with our clients.” The new programme features a more relaxed start to the day, with longer stopovers in major cities for a chance to do some independent travelling. “At Leisure offers a more leisurely pace – for instance, the earliest departure is at 9am. Hotels that have been selected are more resort style, we provide more spare time, and longer stays at each destination,” Mr McGrath said. Trafalgar also announced an expanded Be My Guest programme in 2011, offering more activities in more destinations throughout Europe. The programme is an “all-encompassing experience” with more personal experiences of food, people, culture and traditions. “Be My Guest continues to be popular with clients, and is offered in the programme exclusive to Trafalgar Tours,” Mr McGrath said. “For example, in Provence, our guests will enjoy a winery tour led by the family-owners of the estate, with the chance to sample the wine produced on-site. Later, the group will sit with the family to feast on a delicious freshly prepared lunch of typical Provencal dishes overlooking the picturesque landscape.” Featured in the new At Leisure brochure is a nine-day Royal Britain tour, an eight-day Madrid, Seville & Barcelona itinerary, and an eight-day Budapest, Krakow & Berlin package. Members of the public who took part wrote down solutions and actions to tackle climate change, and build a clean and safe 100% renewable future, FoE said. The organisation called the Cyprus government, as well as the governments of the EU member states, to stop favouring fossil fuels and promote clean energy sources that will ensure the future of the planet and its people. “The EU and member states must cut greenhouse gas emissions and establish radical measures in order to achieve the reduction of emissions. Europe has the potential and the responsibility to do more to speed-up the energy transition, and increase its efforts to tackle climate change for the benefit of the climate and citizens across the world,” it said, adding that the summit in Paris could help end reliance on fossil fuels and reshape the energy system. It said that throughout 2015 and beyond people from around the globe and Friends of the Earth groups would keep up the pressure on national governments to take urgent and appropriate action in line with what science and justice demand, as well as implementing their own solutions to the climate crisis. You May LikePopularEverythingColorado Mom Adopted Two Children, Months Later She Learned Who They Really ArePopularEverythingUndoscienceglory.comNew Evidence on Eerie Easter Island is Changing What We Knewscienceglory.comUndoScience101If You See Square Waves Better Take CoverScience101Undo Pensioner dies after crash on Paphos-Polis roadUndoCypriot tycoon launches ‘Bank of Cannabis’UndoThree arrested in connection with hotel theftsUndoby Taboolaby Taboola read more
The Filipino community of Cyprus have called for the just punishment of whoever killed two of their compatriots whose bodies were found last week dumped in a shaft of an abandoned mine in Mitsero.Police are still searching to locate the body of the six-year-old daughter of one of the two women, after a 35-year-old man admitted to killing the girl and her mother, Mary Rose Tiburcio, 38.The body of Tiburcio was found in the mine shaft a week ago, and in efforts to locate her daughter, authorities found another body on Saturday, widely believed to be that of 28-year-old Arian Palanas Lozano. Both women were from the Philippines and had been reported as missing, Tiburcio and her daughter since last May and Lozano since last July. The suspect reportedly admitted to murdering both women. The Filipino community held a vigil in Nicosia on Sunday in the memory of the two women, attended also by many Cypriots.According to the chairperson of the Federation of Filipino Organisations of Cyprus, Ester Beatty, Lozano was the breadwinner of her family.“She used to send money to her family in the Philippines, her mother is blind and unwell,” Beatty told the Cyprus Mail.Following the latest revelations, she said, the Filipino community on the island are feeling very nervous and people are urging each other on social media to be cautious and avoid meeting people they don’t know. The two women reportedly met with the suspect through an online dating application. She said she hoped that whoever killed the two women will get life imprisonment for their actions.Ray O. Bayson, volunteer leader of the Filippino community in Cyprus, told the Cyprus Mail that the deaths were tragic.“The death penalty must be applied for this unspeakable act of evil,” Bayson said.He added the community now suspects that another of their compatriots, a 30-year-old woman who went missing in December 2017, could have also been a victim of the suspect as her friends said she was probably chatting with him.The woman in question was reported missing from her Nicosia residence in mid-December 2017 and is also included in the police list of missing persons. The community, Beatty said, is disappointed by the way authorities have dealt with the disappearance of these women because they did not investigate further when they were first reported as missing.“They said they probably crossed to the north. Now it has come to this,” she said.Beatty said that there has been some improvement when it comes to the treatment of domestic workers from the Philippines but that some still treat them as slaves. They get as little as €400 per month, she said, and are expected to work from early morning until late at night. Workers living in their employers’ homes are often expected to work the entire day until they go to bed, she said, adding that in some cases they don’t even get enough food.Beatty added that there are of course good employers who take good care of their domestic workers.Meanwhile, Limassol Intercultural Council which is the migrants’ consultative body to the Municipality of Limassol, said on Monday that they have been constantly informed by its members, the Filipino Workers’ Association, as well as Vietnam community representatives about a number of missing persons, mainly women, originating from those two communities.“It seems that a number of those cases have not been investigated in depth,” the group said. You May LikePopularEverythingColorado Mom Adopted Two Children, Months Later She Learned Who They Really ArePopularEverythingUndoLivestlyChip And Joanna’s $18M Mansion Is Perfect, But It’s The Backyard Everyone Is Talking AboutLivestlyUndoModernizeIf Your Home Has Old Roofing, Read ThisModernizeUndo Concern over falling tourism numbersUndoPensioner dies after crash on Paphos-Polis roadUndoCypriot tycoon launches ‘Bank of Cannabis’Undoby Taboolaby Taboola read more
