26 Photos Acura MDXMoving up one slot to sixth place on the American Made Index is the non-hybrid variant of the Acura MDX. With its SH-AWD system, the MDX is one of the better handling midsize luxury crossovers, and for 2019 the company gives us the A-Spec treatment with a new front fascia and side skirts, 20-inch wheels, wider exhaust tips, unique gauges, a new steering wheel, carbon fiber trim and various Alcantara interior touches. However, both the standard and A-Spec models get a 3.5-liter V6 engine, rated for 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque going through a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Acura MDX is made in East Liberty, Ohio. Honda PilotDropping down to seventh place for 2019 is the Honda Pilot. Like its two-row Passport sibling, the three-row Pilot offers parent-focused technology like Cabin Talk as well as myriad standard driver-assistance features through the Honda Sensing tech suite. Honda’s largest crossover offers up nearly 84 cubic feet of cargo space. Honda’s 3.5-liter V6 engine shows up again, making a serviceable 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Touring and Elite trims get a nine-speed automatic transmission while lower trims have to make do with a six-speed auto. The Honda Pilot is made in Lincoln, Alabama. Jeep CherokeeKeeping its top-of-the-list placement, the Jeep Cherokee is 2019’s most American-made car. Refreshed for 2019, the compact crossover now features more tech, better cargo space and a slightly tweaked look. It’s available in no fewer the nine trims, including the off-road specific Trailhawk and a fancy-pants Trailhawk Elite. For 2019, the Cherokee gets a new 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, though naturally aspirated I4 and V6 choices are also available. Regardless of engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission gets the power to the pavement — or dirt as the case may be. Shown here in the tough ZR2 Bison off-road spec, the Chevy Colorado is an excellent truck and one of the two midsize pickups you can get with a diesel engine. Adding to the ZR2’s two-inch lift and front and rear locking differentials, the Bison gets beefier skid plates (trust me, that’s a good thing), steel bumpers and integrated recovery points. Heck, you can even get a snorkel.Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission, but a more popular choice is the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the 2.8-liter diesel pumps out 186 horsepower and a delicious 369 pound-feet of twist and is mated to a six-speed automatic. The Chevy Colorado is built in Wentzville, Missouri. Honda PassportThe Honda Passport is a new (well, reborn) entry to both the Honda lineup and the American Made Index. This midsize crossover comes to the fray with great driving dynamics and plenty of tech like the standard Honda Sensing suite of active safety features. An available 8-inch touchscreen gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot.Under the hood is the stalwart 3.5-liter V6 producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. However unlike the Ridgeline, the Passport sends that power through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Having said that, just like the Ridgeline, this is the only powertrain available. While the 2019 model doesn’t see any changes from last, it’s still a darn good choice for families on the go with reconfigurable seats, Wi-Fi and an excellent rear-seat entertainment system. The Cabin Watch video system lets parents keep an eye on their little darlings without turning around in their seats, while Cabin Talk amplifies their voice so no yelling is required. The Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 rated for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. While we’ve all been ogling the new mid-engine Corvette, it’s easy to forget what a performance bargain the current-generation ‘Vette is. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. The Corvette is made in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Mercedes-Benz,Enlarge ImageIt’s all in a day’s work for the Jeep Cherokee, the most American-made car in 2019. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. Mercedes-Benz A group of 2018 and 2019 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class models are subject to a rather obscure recall that stems from improperly sewn airbags, of all things.Although it sounds like a minor danger, the poor sewing could allow for the airbags to tear during deployment in the event of a crash. Obviously, torn airbags could reduce their effectiveness if they’re deployed. The particular models included in the recall are the 2018-2019 SL450 and SL550, the 2018 SL65 AMG and the 2019 SL63 AMG. Between the four separate models, just 457 cars are part of the oddball recall. The SL450 and SL550 are represent the majority of the recalled cars; the AMG models total 39 cars. The German luxury brand said supplier testing revealed a torn airbag seam on two occasions, which led to the recall.Of note, the only affected airbag is the passenger-side front unit, not the driver-side airbag. Owners will need to bring their S-Class to a dealership where a technician will replace the airbag free of charge; no inspections or anything. Mercedes-Benz said each car will get a new airbag as a precautionary measure.Owners will receive notification by mail starting the first week of October. 2019 Acura RDX A-Spec: Sharp handling, sharper looks 2019 Toyota Prius AWD-e review: A thrifty hybrid with more grip 2019 Jeep Cherokee can handle the rough stuff 71 Photos 2019 GMC Sierra Denali review: So close to greatness Recalls Mercedes-Benz 3 Share your voice 2019 Honda Ridgeline review: Light duty, heavy punch 1:05 Open-top luxury in the Mercedes-Benz SL read more
One of the men from Quinhagak’s four apparent heroin overdoses earlier this week has returned to the village. The other man has not yet returned. The third person, a woman, is dead. The fourth person was treated on site.Listen nowA cloudy day in Quinhagak(Photo by Adrian Wagner, KYUK – Bethel)Earlier reports stated three overdoses, but as of Wednesday afternoon, Trooper spokesman Tim DeSpain says four overdoses happened within the same timeframe.Patrick Cleveland, Quinhagak Tribal Administrator, says one right after the other, three people apparently overdosed on heroin Monday evening.“The first person that was found was unresponsive,” Cleveland said. “Not breathing, lips had turned blue, and had to be revived with CPR.”A medevac picked up the man, and before the aircraft could land in Bethel, another overdose was called in. When the medevac brought the second man to Bethel, word of the third overdose reached them, but that person was already dead.“The young lady that passed, I think she was just out of high school, and the two men are late 20s, early 30s,” said Cleveland.DeSpain says the deceased was 19 years old. Cleveland says her body has been taken to Anchorage for autopsy. The fourth person, DeSpain says was treated in the village and not flown out. When the fourth overdose occurred hasn’t been released.Cleveland says that in the 700-person village, no one is unaffected by the tragedy.“I mean it pretty much shocked the whole community,” Cleveland said.He says the overdoses have ignited anger at the drug dealers and a drive for change.Michelle Matthew with the City of Quinhagak is organizing a community meeting for 5 p.m. today at the school gym to discuss the issue of drugs in the community and what people can do about it. Her expectations for the gathering run high.“I hope people get a sense of hope and fearlessness, because that’s what’s driving these drugs to run amok in our villages,” she said. “Because people are afraid to speak up, and now we are.”Matthew says the tribe is discussing placing extra security measures at its tribally-owned airport, something that she says has been brought up in the past.Cleveland says the WAANT Trooper division – the Western Alaska Alcohol and Narcotics Team – is in town investigating the overdoses, and a team from Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation is expected to arrive today to debrief first responders and families. read more
Share Photo: Office of U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan via InstagramThis file photo shows U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin). Ryan says compromise legislation is in the works on immigration, including measures to protect Dreamers.Republican leaders began the problematic task of finding support for an immigration compromise Wednesday, telling lawmakers that President Donald Trump was backing the still-evolving bill. But cracks within the party were on full display and it seemed that pushing the measure through the House next week would be a challenge.“If it was a resolution on apple pie, you’re going to lose some votes, some Republican votes,” said Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla.A day after top Republicans said the House would vote next week on two competing immigration measures, it was widely assumed that a hard-right measure would lose. That bill would give young “Dreamer” immigrants just limited opportunities to remain in the U.S. while imposing tough restrictions on legal immigration and bolstering border security.GOP leaders, negotiating with quarreling moderates and conservatives, were still writing the second bill. Republicans said it would contain a way for Dreamers to qualify for permanent residence and potentially become citizens, while accepting conservatives’ demands to finance Trump’s proposed border wall with Mexico and restrictions on legal immigration. With Republicans battling to keep their House majority in November’s elections, merely staging the immigration votes, win or lose, achieves some political objectives. The plan helped party leaders block unhappy moderates trying to force the House to consider immigration bills considered too liberal by many Republicans, and will let lawmakers assert that they tried addressing the issue. If both bills lose, “at least you know where everyone stands,” said Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, a member of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus.Democrats seemed likely to solidly oppose both packages. A day after House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Democrats would fight any measure advancing Trump’s immigration policies, the leader of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus said her group’s goal was to have “zero Democratic support” for the GOP bills.Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham, D-N.M., said the Republican measures “are going to make it clearer than ever that Dreamers are pawns for a wall. That is going to be a very difficult thing to defend” in the November elections, she said.Addressing DreamersThe bills represent the GOP’s attempt to address Dreamers, young immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children. Trump last year terminated the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which has temporarily shielded hundreds of thousands of them from deportation. Federal courts have kept the program functioning for now.Even if the compromise measure passed the House, its fate in the Senate was in doubt. Democrats there have enough votes to scuttle any bill.Trump’s backing — especially if he announced it publicly — could help nail down some support. But GOP “no” votes seemed likely, including by some conservatives dubious about granting what they consider amnesty to people in the U.S. illegally. In fact, former Trump White House strategist Steve Bannon told a group of House conservatives Wednesday that “if the House votes for amnesty, then it will deflate the base and they’ll stay home,’” said Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, who invited Bannon. King said Bannon warned that could cost Republicans House control.Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., a Freedom Caucus member, said it was “a pretty big compromise” for him to support the conservative immigration bill because he doesn’t consider it restrictive enough. He said he’d examine details of the middle-ground legislation leaders were crafting before deciding whether to back it and said Trump’s support didn’t sell him.“I’m glad that the president is finding favor with it, but the president hasn’t seen the legislative text either,” Perry said.Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., the Freedom Caucus chairman, said the compromise bill “has a potential of garnering enough moderates to perhaps offset some of the conservatives’ defections.”Trump’s supportAt a closed-door meeting of House Republicans, Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said he’d spoken to Trump and “the president seemed very supportive” of the compromise, Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y., told reporters. That was echoed by Rep. Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., who said, “I know the president, according to Paul today, supports it.”White House senior adviser Stephen Miller told the Republican Study Committee, a large group of House conservatives, that the administration supports the conservative and middle-ground immigration measures, Republicans said.Meanwhile, GOP moderates who’d been trying to force votes on four different immigration measures acknowledged they’d been outmaneuvered by party leaders. The centrists fell two signatures short of 218 — a House majority — needed for a rarely used petition that would have triggered the votes in late June.Top Republicans said the process could have led to a coalition of Democrats and a few Republicans passing bills helping Dreamers without strong enough enforcement provisions — a political fiasco for the GOP. The moderates ended up with 23 GOP signatures and all 193 Democrats.“It’s very obvious” that when some lawmakers stated support for the petition, “they were having several conversations with leadership immediately after that,” said Rep. Jeff Denham, R-Calif., a top moderate.Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., another petition leader, said when leaders announced their plans for two votes, some Republicans backing the petition decided to “continue giving these negotiations a chance.” read more
IceCube: Sketchup Array and IC79 Events (PhysOrg.com) — Physicist Nathan Whitehorn and a team of researchers with the IceCube collaboration have failed to come up with evidence to prove that neutrinos come from, or are caused by, gamma ray bursts, (cosmic explosions) after a year of study. This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. Citation: IceCube researchers come up empty on first neutrino test (2011, April 15) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2011-04-icecube-neutrino.html IceCube neutrino observatory nears completion More information: Limits on Neutrino Emission from Gamma-Ray Bursts with the 40 String IceCube Detector, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 141101 (2011) DOI:10.1103/PhysRevLett.106.141101 Neutrinos are neutral particles that travel through space and pass through any object (such as the Earth) in their path. They are able to do so because they have an avoidance property which for the most part keeps them from running into the atoms that make up matter. The IceCube station was built near the South Pole specifically to capture evidence of the existence of high intensity neutrinos after they’ve passed through the Earth. Many scientists have wondered if they are the result of gamma ray bursts, as some theories predict, but have until now, been unable to test those theories. The IceCube was built to house 5,160 sensitive photon detectors that are able to capture the minute traces of blue light that appear when a neutrino does actually crash head-on into an atom (a very rare occurrence) spraying surrounding ice or water with atomic particles. The idea has been that if such a station were to be built that could capture enough of these collisions before, during and after a gamma ray burst, then it would be possible to see if there was a spike, which would lend credence to the theory that the neutrinos do in fact come from such bursts.Unfortunately, at least so far, things have not worked out that way. During the period of April 5, 2008, through May 20, 2009, nearly 117 gamma ray bursts were detected, but not once did the researchers see any sort of spike, which has led Whitehorn to concede that the amount of neutrino’s that come from gamma rays, if they do at all, is likely smaller than has been theorized.Granted, the statistics published in Whitethorn’s paper in Physical Review Letters, come from a time period where the station was still being built and thus didn’t have enough sensors to gather as much evidence as needed, but the worry is if after further research (at least two more years), there is still no conclusive evidence, researchers such as Whitehorn, will be left with little more than some very serious head-scratching questions for which they, nor anyone else, will likely have any answers. © 2010 PhysOrg.com Explore further read more

The three Ticos did not have prior criminal records. The ton of cocaine was left out at sea by traffickers and later fished out of the water by the three Costa Ricans, according to a statement from ministry. Parents, stop beating yourself up CANNES, France (AP) — As the Cannes Film Festival gets set to open, two trends seem clear: The women are coming — and the selfies are going.Festival chief Thierry Fremaux has fielded questions about female directors and self-photography since he announced the lineup last month — and revealed that he considered selfies the “ridiculous” scourge of the red carpet. The festival that mixes Hollywood heavy-hitters and art-house auteurs kicks off Wednesday with French director Emmanuelle Bercot’s “Standing Tall” — the first time in more than 25 years that a female filmmaker has taken the prestigious opening slot. Former Arizona Rep. Don Shooter shows health improvement Fremaux says English is the global lingua franca but thinks most filmmakers will continue to work in their mother tongues.“When a film (is) shot in Latin America, with a subject matter very, very Argentinian or Chilean or Brazilian — they need to be in their own language,” he said.A day before the opening, as work crews prepared to roll the red carpet over the steps of the Palais des Festivals, Fremaux wished for good weather to cement Cannes’ image as a sun-kissed playground of cinema and sensuality.“The nightmare is to have rain the first day,” he said. “Then people think that the festival was rainy, even if sometimes only one rainy day. But it looks like we (will be) quite lucky.”He also hopes his discouragement of selfies will take hold.“Last year it was a problem,” Fremaux said. “Every single person shooting three pictures of himself during the (procession) of the red carpet for the films. There’s 2,000 seats, so we were late.”Fremaux says he was pleased to see a top fashion magazine agreeing with his judgment and declaring: “it’s over. If you want to be fashionable, please don’t do a selfie.” ___Follow Jill Lawless on Twitter at http://Twitter.com/JillLawlessCopyright © The Associated Press. All rights reserved. (AP Photo/Lionel Cironneau) Comments Share Sponsored Stories Fremaux, who has overseen the festival since 2001, knows the choice won’t silence criticism of an event that remains — like the film industry — male-dominated. There are only two women among the 19 directors competing this year for Cannes’ top prize, the Palme d’Or, although there are more among the scores of other films screening at the 12-day festival.Fremaux insists “it’s not totally true” that women are underrepresented at Cannes.“For the selection we pick films, artists — not men and women, young and old,” he said Tuesday. “But I don’t want to say that it’s not a problem. It is a problem. We need more women, more female directors, in world cinema.”He said the conversation needs to take place year-round, not just during the film festival, “to go to the roots of why, as we have a lot of female singers or female novelists, we don’t have so many female directors.”This year’s lineup is also notable for the number of films by non-Anglophone directors that are in English, including Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino’s “Youth,” which stars Michael Caine, and Norwegian director Joachim Trier’s New York-set “Louder Than Bombs.” Ex-FBI agent details raid on Phoenix body donation facility New Valley school lets students pick career-path academies Top Stories 4 must play golf courses in Arizona Milstead says best way to stop wrong-way incidents is driving sober 5 ways to recognize low testosterone read more

com. ranging from national leaders like Tunisia’s Beji Caid Essebsi to financiers like Brazilian multi-billionaire Jorge Paulo Lemann to artists like the novelist Haruki Murakamia favorite of mine as I’ve been trying to get him on the list since around when the TIME 100 started in 2005 It’s a large and diverse list hailing from five continents But there are a few lessons we can draw from who made the TIME 100and who didn’t: 1 Asia has a crop of strong leaders: China and India may be two of the most dynamic countries in the world but for years their leaders were anything but From 2002 to 2012 China was run by the colorless and cautious President Hu Jintao though most decisions were made not by the president alone but through consensus among the top tier of the Communist Party In India Prime Minister Manmohan Singh presided over a decade of increasingly listless rule ending in 2014 when he left office at the age of 81 But today both China and India are run by forceful leaders eager to to put their stamp on history In the TIME 100 issue President Barack Obama notes that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has “laid out an ambitious vision to reduce extreme poverty improve education empower women and girls and unleash India’s true economic potential” Unlike many of his predecessors Modi has worked to lead from the front and he’s already carved out an impressive international profilenot too many other international leaders can pack Madison Square Garden for a speech as Modi did last September If anything Chinese President Xi Jinping is even more powerfuland more determined to exert direct control of his country In the TIME 100 former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudda Mandarin speaker and China expertwrites that Xi is now “likely to be China’s most powerful leader since Mao” That’s not always a good thing While Xi is carrying out reforms that are needed to make China’s economy more sustainable he’s also ruthlessly cracked down on civil society and challenged the US for global leadership Joining Xi on the list is his tough-minded Internet czar Lu Wei who’s strengthening the Great Firewall A third new Asian leader also made the list: new Indonesian President Joko Widodo Former World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz writes in the TIME 100 that Widodo “has brought youthful energy and a popular touch to his large and diverse nation” But after a promising start last fall Widodo has faltered in his first year in the officeas Wolfowitz goes on to note he’ll need to “overcome the entrenched interests in Indonesia that resist change” 2 Latin America…not so much: Just one Latin American leader made the TIME 100 this year From Mexican President Enrique Pena Nietododging corruption allegations and public anger over a bloody drug warto Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff who may be impeached just a few months after winning re-election it can seem like every Latin American leader is struggling to stay above water Even politicians who have had success in the past are flailingChile’s widely respected President Michelle Bachelet who was on last year’s TIME 100 list has seen her family tainted by corruption allegations The one leader bucking trend: Cuban President Raul Castro who has presided over a historic rapprochement with the US And the region has influencers outside politics Two Brazilians made the listthe surfing champion Gabriel Medina and the multi-billionaire dealmaker Jorge Paulo Lemann (who’s no slouch of an athlete himself winning Brazil’s national tennis championship five times in his youth) The courageous Guatemalan human rights activist Aura Elena Farfan was saluted for “fighting for justice for the tens of thousands who were disappeared or killed during the civil war CNN’s Christiane Amanpour hailed Telemundo anchor Jorge Ramos born in Mexico City as a reporter “determined to get an answer or go down trying” 3 Japan is a cultural superpower: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe didn’t make the TIME 100 list this yearthough having been decisively reelected in December he had a pretty good claim But two other representatives of Japan did The home organizing maven Marie Kondo introduced audiences around the world to the happiness of a scrupulously clean living space (Her most important piece of advice: if an object doesn’t bring you joy chuck it out) And the novelist Haruki Murakami more than earned his spothis most recent novel sold half a million advance copies in Japan before it was even printed and became a bestseller around the world For the TIME 100 we paired him with his countrywoman Yoko Ono who knows a thing or two about succeeding globally who celebrated Murakami’s “great imagination and human sympathy” 4 Africa’s time is nowand Nigeria leads the way: Seven Africans made the listand more came from Nigeria than any other country That includes the new president-elect of Africa’s most populous nation the man TIME’s Aryn Baker called a “born-again democrat” who will face the difficult challenge of defeating the Boko Haram insurgency Doing so could mean killing another TIME 100 selectee: Boko Haram’s enigmatic leader Abubakar Shekau whom retired US General Carter Ham warns “is the most violent killer their country has ever seen” But the African spots on the TIME 100 list go beyond strongmen We selected Obiagali Ezekwesili an anticorruption activist in Nigeria who has dedicated her life to ensuring that the hundreds of girls kidnapped by Boko Haram aren’t forgotten The actor Idris Elba hailed Dr Jerry Brown of Liberia for his heroic work to help stop the Ebola outbreak that killed thousands in West Africa “It is because of this man’s actionsrather than his words” Elba wrote “that many lives were saved” 5 Women are changing the world: Women make up nearly half the TIME 100 list ranging from the pinnacle of power to activists on the ground The German Chancellor Angela Merkel isn’t just the most powerful women in the worldshe’s one of the most powerful people period “Angela Merkel” writes Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko “managed to leverage German economic power into diplomatic power” France’s Marine Le Pen isn’t loved by everyone but she’s become a major force in French politicsand Europe could be next But for every political or business leader there are women like Chai Jing the courageous Chinese journalist whose environmental documentary Under the Dome was watched by more than 200 million people in China Dr Joanne Liu the Canadian-born head of Doctors Without Borders got the Ebola crisis right when so many of her peers got it wrong And of course there’s Malala Yousafzai the young Pakistani activist who first made the TIME 100 in 2013 at age 15 All she’s done in the meantime is win a Nobel Peace Prizeso we decided to put her on the list again And that gave us the chance to publish another young woman the Syrian Mezon Allmellehan who wrote that “yes I can make a difference and I have to continue to fight for what I believe in” Fitting words for an extraordinaryand influentialcollection of women and men from around the world Contact us at editors@timecomLondon: A new sculpture in honour of Indian soldiers who fought during World War I was unveiled on Sunday in the town of Smethwick in the West Midlands region of England on Sunday Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick had commissioned the "Lions of the
