The IHSAA has a committee in place that is considering a re-districting of several state tournaments. The major one on this list is basketball. Consider what East Central’s girls basketball team had to face in their first sectional game. They were required to make a trip from St. Leon to Bloomington on a Tuesday night to play a 6 p.m. sectional basketball game. If that weren’t bad enough, they had to play Bloomington South on their own floor. I am sure the result of this long bus ride played a part in the Trojans tough loss. You will remember that the last time Batesville won a boys sectional the boys had to travel to Washington, Indiana, for the regional. There has to be a better system. The purest will say that the easiest solution is to do away with Class Basketball. We all know this is not going to happen. The committee studying this problem is looking at a 3-class system that would alleviate a lot of the travel. I am not sure this would help that much, but it would be better. I would like to see playing on your home court eliminated, but that would probably add to the travel as well. It is a knotty problem that will take a lot of trial and error to correct.
